If you have a good background, a strong training and a career start before you took some time off (I guess home and children), you have a good chance... it is a matter of self-promotion, and in can be intensely rewarding. Of course, you will still feel the crunch of the lost years, but in the process you will probably notice you have gained a maturity as well as managing skills that were not there before.
On the backside, without a strong background it can be difficult to get any company interested.
Start with building up a network - sites such as linkedin.com can help. Also, look in monster and hotjobs at the types of jobs you could be filling, and consider taking some re-training to complete what you have already. If possible at all, see how you can fill some of the "empty" years with everything you have done: PTA participation, lead of any organizational group - even if it is only for the church yearly lottery!!! that is all good stuff that shows that you are an interesting, active and committed individual.
Best of luck.

You describe yourself as mid-40's but how old do you FEEL? Have you kept your hand in with computers? Have you been away from the workplace for long? How easy will it be to update your most marketable skills? If it has been a while since you were in work, does your skill even exist in a recognizable form?
For most people, it is not easy getting back into work. However, anyone with a good work ethic and an ability to re-learn will find it much easier than anyone who thinks they should just be able to pick up where they left off.

Going back to the workforce can be stressful, but also very rewarding. Hopefully you can find a job that you enjoy.
It won't be easy, but few worthwhile things in life are. Connect with supportive people in your life and remember to take care of yourself. And best of luck to you, I really hope things work out for you.

Depends on how long you have not work and the salary you are asking. But I think they will face fierce competition from those who are younger and don't demand a high pay
