Every time I reprimand it, it jumps right back onto it, and makes an attempt to avoid being grabbed by running quickly on top of the sofa. It's driving me crazy.

You need to be calm, assertive, and 100% consistent.
Anyone else in the house that can be a bad influence on the dog's training?

I have the same problem with my dog and she does not care if I am sat in her way (and she hurts). I have just started with the holding her down by the scruff of the neck (like a mother would do to a pup) and holding my head above hers with a stern no. Then I make her get off the sofa. She is slowly learning that if she gets up on the sofa gently she can stay and even gets stroked

Go to Walmart ask get a length of clear plastic carpet protector runner that has the knobby ends on the backside and place that upside down on the seating, it is not very comfortable for dogs to walk or sit on .

Do some behaviour training and up his outdoor exercise such as walks as well so you have better control over him

a good way is to have a plastic drinking bottle filled with small stones. when they jump on to sofa shake the bottle hard near them and say no clearly. they do not like the noise and usually respond straight away. hope this will help

get some small mouse traps. the old fashioned kind with the metal lever that snaps. cover the couch with them set. when the dog jumps up it will set off the traps and make lots of scary noise. the traps do not actually snap the dog. they just scare it. after doing that a couple of times you will not even have to set them any more, just place them on the couch. set them once in a while to keep the fear up. we have done this for years and our dogs have never been injured, their feet are a bit bigger than a mouse. give it a try. IT WORKS!!

Keep a squirt gun or spray bottle filled with plane water handy. Squirt them in the face. It doesn't hurt and they usually get the message unless they love water and don't mind being squirted, like one of my dogs does, which is giving me the same problem.

Take a rolled up newspaper, give him a sharp hit so he knows he got it. (newspaper is pretty soft you know) That cured my dog fast. She like to please and she is better than many people to me. There is nothing like an obedient, loving dog.
