I just bought my pet dog. It doesn't seem to like me. This sounds pathetic, but how can I make it like me?

Is he just like this with you or with everyone.

If it is you try to relax around him and give treats and plenty of play.

If it is everyone then he just needs to settle in to his new environment.

Its not pathetic, you need your dog to like you so that he will behave for you when he is older, and so that you can enjoy each others company.
He's still a baby, if you have him at 2 months old and he has already been in the pet shop a while he must have been seperated from his mum very early.
He will have bonded with the handler at the shop, and will feel really scared and disorientated by another move so young in his life.
Make sure he has a comfortable safe bed where he can rest and feel secure, be gentle and kind to him, and let him get to know you. Give him lots of affection and fuss when he comes to you. Make sure he has one person (ie you!) who feeds him and takes him out for walks etc, that way he will be less confused and know you are his human! Soon he will become attached to you and be your friend!

I just read a comment that stated buying a dog from a pet shop is a bad idea, because the pup doesn't know if this home is going to be a lasting home?? I disagree. Those dogs need homes just as well as the next! If anything after you give it a bit more time and he does come around while realizing you are keeping him, he will become a better companion! Dogs are very sensitive to peoples voices. Or someone could have abused him as a baby, and you may remind him of that person. My advice: Give him sometime, show him plenty of attention, and spoil him, try not to raise your voice around him and give him a lot of praise. Good Luck

Try feeding it meals by hand rather than out of a bowl.

Also, give a lot of vocal praise. Dogs know when people are pleased with them, and they generally like it.

Give him time to come around to you. Don't expect too much too soon. Don't force him to cuddle, although be generous with your casual pats and pets.

EDIT: Oh, OK, it was a "pet shop dog." Well, this was probably a puppy mill dog and regardless of what you say about the handler at the shop, the dog was probably not properly socialized with people and furthermore was probably taken away from its mum too early. Expect to have trouble potty-training, too.

He doesn't have the faintest idea who you are or where he is! He's already changed homes twice, once from his mother and litter mates to the pet shop, and again from there to your place. And he's only 8 weeks old.
He's used to being handled by a female and you're male. To him that means you're the pack leader so he might be a bit in awe of you.
You need to reassure him as well as feeding him. Make him a comfy bed, make a dog loo in the garden and take him there regularly through the day, reward him when he uses it. Play with him.

First of all, buying a dog from a pet shop is a very bad idea. At 8 weeks you are his 3rd home, so he doesn't know he's staying with you or if he's going to be moved on again in a couple of weeks. Just give him time, give him plenty of attention & training & don't expect too much too soon. He'll love you to bits eventually.

Hi!

Why do you think he doesn't like you??

He will need time to settle in. Just give him lots of love, treats and enough space to do his own thing until he trusts you. Dogs are very sociable, but you need to earn their trust first.

Also, if it's a dog and not a puppy, does this mean he is from a rescue home? If so, you will obviously need to be extra patient and loving, as God only knows what kind of human he has been exposed to before coming to live with you.

:-) Hope this helps! Hang in there and be patient, you'll be best friends soon!

you dont really give much information. How old is the dog, where did you get it from?If it's a rescued dog,it may take a little while for your dog to trust you especially if it's been mis-treated.Food is a good way of getting your dog to come near you if it shy's away.Once it realizes you're the main food source,it'll start trusting you and be your friend forever.Be patient with the dog and let it come to you first, dont make any sudden movements or you'll frighten it.It may take a few weeks for your dog to fully trust you.If you've got children, dont leave them alone in the room with the dog.Good luck

It's not that the dog doesn't like you. It doesn't know you yet. You have to understand, that the dog just needs some time, to adjust to it's new surroundings, and to you. Everything is new and unfamiliar to it. Let the dog come to you, until it know it can trust you. It will adjust in time, and will be fine.

Some puppies are just shy......keep trying....just give it the love and attention, excercise it needs and it will come around. give it some time. The more sure of yourself you rare the more it will take to you. Don't be overly aggressive but don't act like a whinning whimp crying around my doggie doesn't love me. Be self confidient, love the puppy, feed him only yourself and care for him only by yourself and he will bond with you.
