they learn by watching other dogs. bring your dog to a dog run where other males are hanging out and soon enough he will start lifting his leg just like his new "cool buddies"

First - congratulations on an awesome dog!
I had a 2 year old male Chesapeake that squatted until he was around other dogs a lot. He finally figured it out but still would squat when he was being lazy.

My male Akita of 11 months lifted his leg for the first time about 4 weeks ago. It's part of maturing into a teenager (God help us the teenage tantrums are about to descend). Your retriever will lift his leg in the next few months. Don't worry you wouldn't expect a toddler being potty trained to wee standing up if he was male would you? It's the same sort of thing, they mature into it.

This is perfectly normal The time that a male dog starts to lift his leg will vary from dog to dog, and some may never do it at all. Smaller breeds will start to lift their leg much earlier than a larger breed, but generally speaking anytime after 12 months would be average.

My six-year-old male dog still occasionally pees like a girl.

He did this for most of his first 8-10 months. We were so proud the day we saw him finally lift his leg and water a tree!

Because no one has ever taught him do anything any different. All sexes start out squatting. Most will not learn to lift their leg until they become of age to become sexually active and start marking their territory....even then if you don't walk then around trees, or let them around buildings you can teach them not to hike the leg...if ya want.

My dog is 13 years old and he still goes weird. Sometime he picks up his front leg. Mostly he just stops walking and kind of bends his legs. So, your dog may never pee like a male.
