I have a green/black irish knot design tattoo on my lower back thats a pretty decent size and I really want to get a big design going up my side starting by my hip and going up my side to my upper back or something like that. Im thinking that this might look silly bc of my lower back tat. Any artist or ppl have any input or different ideas I could use?? thanks!

i think you need to take your existing tattoo and work a design from there, there are many ways you can go, but as both will be visible together it needs to be taken into account, this way you can either stop at that or continue adding to it over time, i learned early on to think in advance when planning tattoos!! mine go up my arms, over my shoulders and across my back, and its still a work in progress, go along to your artist and talk it over, they will enjoy the challenge of incorporating your ideas/wants & needs into a work of art, when i worked in a studio it was a breath of fresh air from just taking a flash off the wall, Good luck

I think you're right to take into account the tattoo you already have when planning another - not to do so could result in a hodge-podge of clashing styles and shapes. But I certainly don't think that just because you have one tattoo already on your back, that to have another going onto your back would look 'silly'. You just need to think it out right.

I'd suggest that in order to start getting your ideas straight you draw pictures (they don't have to be brilliant - just rough sketches) of what you already have and what you're thinking of adding. You could even get someone to take pictures of your back and draw onto these. Doing this will pretty quickly give you an idea of what will be sympathetic to your existing tattoo and what won't.

Equally, take advice from your tattoo artist. Their whole job, after all, it to put tattoos on people; they're going to have a pretty good idea of what will work.

Hope this helps - enjoy getting your new tattoo!

Getting a tattoo on your side is painful tattoo to get. I have 7 hours of outline done to my sides. I have to say the tattoos on my side look the most impressive of all tattoos that i have. Seeing them on a few other people they do look good. I say go for it. I really don't have any idea's what tattoo for you to get without seeing the one on your back. But good luck with whatever you get.

I do have a lower back tattoo..its a tribal butterfly. It's more than a year now since I got it.

For me, its enough that you have one tattoo. You will really look silly if you add another tattoo. Although its cool but right now regrets are starting to cloud my mind especially on how to explain it to my kids in the future.

probably keep to something celtic.. like maybe a scene from celtic legends book or something.. or get together ideas of what you want.. lakes, rivers, animals, different kinds of trees.(all very good things for a back piece). and take it to an artist you trust and have them draw something up. .. and then work with him/her on changing anything you want different.

maybe get a vine with shamrocks going up your side. Stick with the Irish theme, surf the net for Irish symbols and such.

40 Years Later:
"Grandma, what's this?"
"Well sweetie, if you try and pull the wrinkled skin tight you can see it was once Granny's Irish knot tatoo."
