marinade raw mackerel in lemon juice and white wine vinegar (and chillis and garlic if you want) - it cooks the fish enough to eat and it's even tastier because you haven't cooked out any goodness or flavour

Yes you have nothing more tasty than grilled Mackerel, however I can go one better. The mackerel has to be fresh and not days old as can be the case unless you know what you are buying. Even so I live in near Peterhead which boasts Europes biggest white fish fishing fleet and I still have a problem getting hold of fresh mackerel...all sent for freezing to sell onto the supermarkets.
Sorry to go on but you have struck cord....UK fresh food....where ???

Mackerel, fresh out of the water and grilled over an open fire on the beach. There's nothing better.

Actually I think you've got me there - I love grilled mackerel but get told off by my partner - he hates the smell. Cheese on toast is simple but you have to cut the cheese! hmmm.... good question!

Cook the mackerel then mash add a teaspoon of horseradish, 4 tablespoons of creme fraiche, a sprinkle of pepper and a squeeze of lemon (like a pate) then add to hot toast!
