Hi, you dont say which Island, if you are on Oahu, check out the Farmers market at the back of the Ward Centre, also the weekly Swap meet at Pearl, you can pick up good quality meat, fish and veg there and a lot of general groceries as well. The big supermarkets are expensive to use but you can live pretty well, avoid any market that is aimed at tourists like the one at the Stadium and dont try to shop in Waikiki or Ala Moana, keep off the tourist trail and you should be ok.

I live on Oahu. Fresh fruit and veggies - farmer's markets all over the island - you just have to find one in your area - what times and days. I shop for all my veggies and fruit at the Waipahu Farmer's Market - at the community park - Tues 8:30 - 9:30 am.
Some items are high - milk is high, so are bread items, although there are some that are cheaper. Foodland carries bread by 'Love', and although not the best, it is the cheapest.
I don't eat meat, so I rely a lot on fresh fish and chicken. I get my chicken at Costco - way cheaper. They also have fresh fish on the weekends.
There are lots of places you can just pull off the road and pick fruit, etc - make sure it's not someones property though.
Rice is pretty cheap - I get mine at almost any store - check the ads at Safeway - they often run two for one's - I recently picked up olive oil, normally $12 per bottle, two for one - so in essence $6 per bottle - not bad.
Since I do a lot of stir fry and fresh fruits and veggies, I actually don't have too high a food bill.

Food in Hawaii is expensive. There's basically no such thing as cheap food there, since almost everything is imported from California. Your best bet is to get yourself a Safeway card and restrict your purchases to ONLY things that are on discount. When I lived there I economized by eating simply and taking advantage of the fruit trees in my neighborhood.

Try Safeway. If you do not have a Safeway discount card, apply for one. You will save money. (And you can use it to get cash back when you shop, so you can avoid out-of-state ATM fees!)
If you have a COSTCO membership, try that as well.
By all means, avoid any convenience store at or near resorts. My wife and I once went walking down the beach path in Wailea and decided to stop at the Kehalani Resort for a snack. Big mistake. One bagel and two lattes: $18. No joke.
On the other hand, at COSTCO, you can get a big hot dog and all you can drink soda for $1.50.
Hope this helps and enjoy!

Live here in Oahu now. We are budget on everything.
Look for mid-week ad (you can subcript to it if you live in Oahu). The general sale usually start from Wed to the following Tue. The stores that advertise in Mid Week, usually also has a copy of the ad, available to customers at their stores. You can request a copy from the store or just look at the ad, posted on the wall usually.
Don Quijote (formerly known as Daiei or Holiday Mart) has additional sale from Sun to following Sat.
Longs Drug (also selling some fresh food) ad are always from Wed to Sat, then Sun to Wed (note: Wed is a over-lap, so it is a good chance to shop on Wed to hit both sale). They also has a once a month booklet sale. It often comes on Sunday Newspaper (Honolulu adverister). That booklet of sale items last from Sun to the following Sat.
Other stores like Safeway, Foodland, Walmart, Times, Stars Market, Marukai, Costco, Sam Club ( the last 3 stores mentioned need to pay membership fee) are most commonly found. They are the bigger store, which mean, they probably sell more volumn, thus, they can negotiate for better price.
For some fresh products, you may find them cheaper sometimes in China Town. Shop around and you may also bargain! Note: swap meat at Aloha Stadium is more for cheap t-shirts etc. No much food items. And the last time I bought macadamia nut from them, a few days later, Don Quijote sold it for less price!
We buy things at sale times and stock up a lots of food when it is a great sale! Just take note that, not every single items are cheaper at ONE store. Some items might be cheaper at Longs, some might be cheaper at Safeway. Others might be at some other stores.
We planned our weekly shopping by looking thru Mid Week. Drop them down. On the way home from work/church etc, we will stop buy to get the food. This will save some gas. Also, if there isn't a store near us or on the way home, we don't go. Must take into account of gasoline used to go out of the way to buy stuffs.
Raincheck can be issue for most items not available at the time of sale. Rain check means they will sell you the sale price of that particular items at another date. It usually has expiration date too.
Below are some web-sites of stores in Hawaii. They have their ad listed too.

Food is NOT expensive for us because we have the privilege to shop at THE COMMISSARY. The Commissary is so big, so cool & everything is so cheap & we do NOT pay any tax. Everything is very cheap for us because of the Military. Super Markets in Hawaii are not cheap. You have to be part of the Military to get massive discounts....sorry!
