Because love is a choice not an emotion. Everyone will go through times with their friends or their spouse where it is just hard, and they don't feel like loving them. But that is when the choice of love is made.

Love is putting the other person before yourself, and that is very hard to do since by nature we are very self centered people.

Every one wants love, but some people can't see beyond their own wants to see the needs of others. They can't love others enough to give up their own wants so their loved ones needs can be met.

It is the "Looking out for number 1" mentality that messes up relationships.

Here are a few definitions of love from the Bible

Love is never tired of waiting; love is kind; love has no envy; love has no high opinion of itself, love has no pride;
Love’s ways are ever fair, it takes no thought for itself; it is not quickly made angry, it takes no account of evil;
It takes no pleasure in wrongdoing, but has joy in what is true;
Love has the power of undergoing all things, having faith in all things, hoping all things. (1 Corinthians 13:4-7)

Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends (John 15:13)

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life (John 3:16)

Because everyone wants a different type of love, not the love they're recieving.

For example, a Christian may think it's loving for them to preach to me, but I recieve it instead as condemnation and bigotry, so you can see how this gets mistranslated.

One, must first learn how to give love.

Love is interaction. If one is willing to be unselfish and offer his heart, it is most possible he will find love soon.
