Speaking as a Canadian who lived in the States for a few years -- I can kind of understand where (s)he was coming from.

I'm not saying it was a polite thing to say. It wasn't. But.

It seems to be very "American" -- at least to an outsider -- to have a bit of a sink-or-swim attitude towards the general populace. The best way I can illustrate it is this:

An American friend's car ran into problems, and needed a 'boost.'

For him, it was completely natural to figure we'd call a tow truck, and wait around in the less-than-ideal situation for one to show up, and pay for this boost, etc.

For me, it was completely natural to just ask people walking by in the parking lot if they had (1) jumper cables, (2) a moment.

Here, your car breaks down like that, you just ask the next person you see. (And, if you're asked, you don't hesitate.) Calling for paid assistance would happen only in an isolated area; this was in a parking lot. It might have something to do with the climate -- it's the same deal when somebody's car is stuck in the snow.

I did find somebody to help us, but I'm pretty sure some people thought the request odd. 'Why is this stranger addressing me?' 'Why would I help this stranger?'

As for actually pointing that out -- hrm.

Okay, another anecdote. A Canadian friend came down to visit me in the States; first thing we did was hit a pub. We got a little tipsy, and my friend started telling a joke that necessitated impersonating a Pakistani accent. Me and the American who was with us had to explain to him that it wasn't really kosher to do that. It would've been a funny joke in a pub, and funny, I think, to a Pakistani. It seemed to me that a lot of the US' racial tensions stemmed from the inability to bring things out in public, gently mock them, and acknowlege them as differences -- and leave it at that. It was not insulting. The tension of not being able to even mention that people tend to be different really got to me after a while, and I'm sure I said some inappropriate things as a result.

For what that's worth...

If it were me, I would tell her that the only real Americans are the American Indians, and even they, if you listen to the scientists, did not originate here, but also came from elsewhere! They have just been here a lot longer, and were the first.
So I would confront her with how insulting she might have been, had you not known that all Americans originally came from elsewhere, therefore we are all nice!

Just ignore it. I used to work with someone who had just moved from the Ukraine. She had the same kind of attitude.I think it is becuase when she first came here and even though she spoke english it wasn't in perfect dialect for how people here really talk and there are many cultural differences. Because of this many americans are very rude to people who just moved to the country because they are ignorant and don't want to deal with making the person feel welcome or helping them understand the language and culture of their new home. I don't think your co worker meant to be rude, they probably are just feeling frustrated.

Yes that is very insulting, and if that person feels that way maybe it is because of the way that they treat the Americans!!!! I think that so many of the people that come here expect us to give them everything and when we don't they consider us mean, yet if we went to their country they would not do half of the things for us that we do for them. Now you see who is really rude.

It was rude of her to say but it actually makes sense. Unfortunately American society has much less strict standards when it comes to etiquette and therefore we come off as a bit boarish to most people abroad. Don't be too insulted, I'm sure she didn't mean anything bad by it.

Your question isn't coherent, but I think you're insinuating that he said that something to the affect of their not being any nice Americans, and if that is what you are saying, then I say to him, go to Europe, you'll find some not so nice people there.

Perhaps you should politely hand this person a bus schedule, with the Canada bound routes highlighted. Maybe he/she would be more comfortable among the "nice" people of that country.

Yeah...I agree. I am sure she was just making a lighthearted comment (I hope so, anyway) but that was pretty rude. I, personally, think most Americans are quite nice and friendly. If she said something like this again....say something to her about how it offends you!

The son of the soil is American Indians.. All others are settlers only...American Indians culture and religious values were crushed by church and preachers...They were either converted to Christianity by the settlers or faced death sentence by hanging...That is the essence of the truth!!!
