Here's a simple summary of vocal range sizes:
2 octaves = normal
3 octaves = impressive
4 octaves = freakish
5 octaves = bullshit
Anything beyond that is just more bullshit, increasing exponentially with each additional alleged octave.

Way wrong Yogini. An octave is only eight notes(12 if you're counting chromatics). Most good singers will have a range of about 2 and a half to three octaves. Men have more if you count falsetto...and maybe if you feel like giving Mariah Carey credit for whistle tones (I sure don't) A singer who could only sing an octave would be VERY boring. People like Christina A are probably pushing 4 octaves. People like Mariah claim to have 7 octaves. I say, Grabage. You stop counting notes towards your range when you no longer produce good tone while singing them.

I dislike all celebrity singers. I have a range of 3 octaves and a fourth. Beat that, celebrity singers!

Again, I differ from Lynn. An average celebrity singer (I'm assuming you're talking about Beyonce here) sings about an octave. You really don't hear much change in her register or the notes she sings in any given song. You'd be stretching it with 1.5 which I think Christina Aguilera is around there probably a bit more....Bono sings around there to maybe about 2....maybe not quite...

one and a half to two octaves, not including the falsetto for men and the whistle tones for women.
