english came to the united states. however, i don't hear native americans saying learn our language. the spanish speaking population is quickly growing in the united states, and yes most know english as well. you will probably wish you had learned some spanish. if you boycott spanish you would have to boycott all other languages other than english as well and in my opinion this shows a lack of cultural tolerance. the united states is the united states because we have great diversity in our culture including the languages you may hear walking down the street. learning english is not an issue of respect. english is one of the most (if not the most) difficult language to learn and many people do not have the resources to learn it. there are many english speakers in the united states who do not support the troops, who burn the flag, and who show no patriotism. do they show more respect than someone who may not know much english but loves the country?

Of course, people who decide to reside in America long-term should learn to speak English. It is the predominant language and, if for no other reason, English skills will make life easier in the U.S. for any immigrant.

However, Spanish-speaking people in the United States have the right to communicate with one another, particularly within their families and among friends, in their native language. It fosters community and preserves culture and affirms identity. And the United States is not a homogenous society nor was it ever meant to be one, so preserving the cultures, customs and languages of immigrants to our country must be accepted.

Furthermore, the Spanish-speaking population in our country is sure to continue rising. It would be foolish for you to instruct your OWN children not to learn Spanish, as being bilingual in Spanish and English could very well help them get jobs some day.

So what you're saying is to encourage your own people not to learn another language?(Which will be consider ignorance) Most of the time, it is the Hispanic or the Italian, or the German, or the Chinese, or the African the one that learns English, not the American learning other languages. So instead of encouraging them to stop themselves from growing and learning, why not to open the horizons to the different cultures this great country has to offer? It is what this country is based on, and because of that IT IS GREAT! God bless!

I do agree that foreign speaking people need to learn English, so as to be able to communicate with the majority of the US, but to boycott Spanish isn't going to help anything. The world is full of different languages and people who choose to learn them can go to those countries and be able to communicate there, so not teaching a language is not in everyones best interest. BTW, don't you know that translators make alot of money?

Uh, you can't boycott a language. Scientists learn Latin and German because old documents are usually in those languages. Religious figures study Latin because of the history also. Other people learn a language to visit another country and to speak their language when they visit. If you visit Mexico, do you expect them to speak English to you? Most people do. How right is that?!? Besides, the United States doesn't have a declared official language. So yeah, boycotting a language is impossible. It's close to a being a very racist comment in my opinion. The United States isn't superior or more special, we're just developed and so people believe everyone should cater to them. Not opening up to other cultures is selfish and so closed minded. Then turning around and asking that everyone open up to YOUR culture is just hypocritical.
