When you pray your daily prayers, what do they have to do, say, and at what times do they do them? I was just watching a television show describing the life of a Muslim girl in the United States. I watched this child during her prayers and I was astounded at how she bowed to God. Christians...well, we are not so humble. So when you pray, Muslims, what do you do?

Prayer (Salah), in the sense of worship, is the second pillar of Islam. Prayer is obligatory and must be performed five times a day. These five times are dawn (Fajr), immediately after noon (Dhuhr), mid-afternoon ('Asr), sunset (Maghrib), and early night (Isha'). Ritual cleanliness and ablution are required before prayer, as are clean clothes and location, and the removal of shoes. One may pray individually or communally, at home, outside, virtually any clean place, as well as in a mosque, though the latter is preferred. Special is the Friday noon prayer, called Jum'ah. It, too, is obligatory and is to be done in a mosque, in congregation. It is accompanied by a sermon (Khutbah), and it replaces the normal Dhuhr prayer.

There is no hierarchical clerical authority in Islam, no priests or ministers. Prayers are led by any learned person who knows the Qur'an and is chosen by the congregation. He (or she, if the congregation is all women) is called the imam. There is also no minimum number of congregates required to hold communal prayers. Prayer consists of verses from the Qur'an and other prayers, accompanied by various bodily postures - standing, bowing, prostrating and sitting. They are said in Arabic, the language of the revelation, though personal supplications (Du'ah) can be offered in one's own language. Worshippers face the Qiblah, the direction of the Ka'bah in the city of Makkah.

The significance of prayer lies in one's maintaining a continuous link to God five times a day, which helps the worshipper avoid misdeeds if he/she performs the prayers sincerely. In addition it promotes discipline, God-consciousness and placing one's trust in Allah alone, and the importance of striving for the Hereafter. When performed in congregation it also provides a strong sense of community, equality and brotherhood/sisterhood.

Muslims are instucted to pray five times a day. The first one is at dawn, the second during midday, the third at mid-afternoon, the fourth at sunset, and the last one is at night.
Other than that a muslim can perform prayers at recommended times or whenever they feel like.

A prayer consists of parts which must be performed in order and not missed out.
Other ppl here have described them.

I love the way we are summoned to prayers by the athan which proclaims God and His message. I miss it so much when i don't hear it. Then you see people drop what they're doing and slowly head over to perform their prayers.
It's such a beautiful scene. five times a day this is repeated;ppl drop any business and turn to God to praise Him and give thanks.
perhaps you could check out some of the words recited during prayers. It would help you understand more.

Salah or Prayer

Salah is the name for the obligatory prayers that are performed five times a day, and are a direct link between the worshipper and God. There is no hierarchical authority in Islam and there are no priests. Prayers are led by a learned person who knows the Qur'an and is generally chosen by the congregation.

Prayers are said at dawn, mid-day, late-afternoon, sunset and nightfall, and thus determine the rhythm of the entire day. These five prescribed prayers contain verses from the Qur'an, and are said in Arabic, the language of the Revelation. Personal supplications, however, can be offered in one's own language and at any time.

Although it is preferable to worship together in a mosque, a Muslim may pray almost anywhere, such as in fields, offices, factories and universities. Oftentimes visitors to the Muslim world are struck by the centrality of prayers in daily life.

Just remember that Salaat or Salaah is more than prayer; it is both praise and prayer. Instead of describing in long hand, I am appending below links that answer your queries. Hope that these are of help.

May I mention here that Muslims worship exactly the way Testaments ask us to worship. Kindly check Praise and Worship section of the last link:

"Then David said to the whole assembly, 'Praise the LORD your God.' So they all praised the LORD, the God of their fathers; they bowed low and fell prostrate before the LORD and the king." (29:20)

If you need more quotations from the bible about any aspect of Muslim worship - ablution, prostration, praise, prayer etc. I would be very glad to provide you those.

Dear friend, that was a good question and our friend ''lee'' gave u a great answer, but id like to add to his/her answer the wisdom behind all the steps of our prayers.
in the 1st step: we clean ourselves and make sure that the place we r practicing the prayers is clean, its because we r having an appointment with God The king of kings, and this is what every1 in the world would normally do if told he has to meet with a king or the president wants to meet him, one makes sure he is clean!
2nd, we say ''Allah Akbar'', its a way to clear our mind and hearts and announce that starting from this moment up, there is nothing or no1 in our hearts or mind but God, thats all we feel and all we think about, again like when ur in adate with some1 u love, u dont think about the world around u, u just focus on the one u love!
3rd the way we stand and recite the 1st chapter, its a conversation with God, and God promised that every verse we read, He answers us back and at the end of the chapter God says ''its between Me and My worshipper and he shall ask Me what he wants''
4th when we bow, in humblness, God said that the sins gather on our back and when we stand again it all falls down.
5th when we stand up its the only time we praise God instead of saying ''Allah akbar'', as we thank Him for creating us with staright backs, non of His creation was created with staright backs but humans, cuz He honours us, He created us to lead earth and other species, He freed our hands and we thank Him for that.
6th prostrating is the ultimate goal of praying, when we completely submit to Him in humbleness, and its where we r the most close to Him in real, and its where when we ask Him, He never turns us down, we put the most honourable part of our bodies'' our forehead'' on the ground infront of Him, announcing that we belong to no1 or nothing else but Him, and if non muslims would think of this act would realise how honourable it is, and we r banned from doing this act or even bowing to anything or any1 in the world, and we do it twice as a confirmation, we need to make this concept settled in our hearts, and if u ask any muslim would tell u that its the most close acts to our hearts, from the moment we start praying we cant wait to do it as we know how near we are to God at this point.
also, this act was scientifically proven that it helps the body gets rid of electro magnetic radiation as these radiation move from a positive host(the body) to a negative one(earth), thats y our prophet told us whenever we have a headache or sth we go pray!!!!!
the last step, when we turn our heads to the right and left, "may peace God's mercy and blessings be upong u'', its a greeting to the right and left angels that accompany us during the prayers and thru our days!

I hope u found what i wrote useful, God bless u

how sweet you are,and may you be guided.thats the best question i have seen at yahoo answers
o.k.,i have a great flash(link) here,

Five times each day, Muslims bow down to Allah in prayer. If you are learning how to pray, or are just curious about what Muslims do during prayer, follow along with these general guidelines.

Here's How:

1. Make sure your body and place of prayer are clean. Make the intention to perform your obligatory prayer.
2. Standing, raise hands up and say "Allahu Akbar" (God is Most Great).
3. Standing with hands folded over chest, recite the first chapter of the Qur'an in Arabic. Then recite any other verses of the Qur'an that you would like.
4. Raise hands up, saying "Allahu Akbar." Bow, reciting three times, "Subhana rabbiyal adheem" (Glory be to my Lord Almighty).
5. Rise to standing while reciting "Sam'i Allahu liman hamidah, Rabbana wa lakal hamd" (God hears those who call upon Him; Our Lord, praise be to You).
6. Raise hands up, saying "Allahu Akbar." Prostrate on the ground, reciting three times "Subhana Rabbiyal A'ala" (Glory be to my Lord, the Most High).
7. Rise to a sitting position, saying "Allahu Akbar." Prostrate again in the same manner.
8. Rise to a standing position, saying "Allahu Akbar."
9. This concludes one "rak'a" (cycle or unit of prayer). Begin again from Step 3 for the second rak'a.
10. After two rak'as, one remains sitting after the prostrations and recites the first part of the Tashahhud in Arabic.
11. If the prayer is to be longer than these two rak'as, one now stands up and begins again to complete the prayer, sitting again after all rak'as have been completed.
12. Recite the second part of the Tashahhud in Arabic.
13. Turn to the right and say "Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah" (Peace be upon you and God's blessings).
14. Turn to the left and repeat the greeting.
