It's possible. Dogs are actually omnivores, and unlike cats they can happily live on a purely vegetarian diet. This requires a big commitment from the dog's owner, because the dog will require the same kind of carefully balanced vegetarian diet that a person needs. Just like a human vegetarian, your dog will need B-12 supplements of some sort to be healthy.

It is not uncommon for a dedicated vegetarian dog owner to desire that his dog follow his diet. Based on religious or moral values, there are some dog owners who would insist that their dogs be feed a vegetarian food only.
While I’m not against vegetarian diet for humans, since it is proven to a certain extent that we humans can survive on a vegetarian diet. Nevertheless, it is still debatable if dog owners should make their dogs go vegan, since studies shown that it might not be healthy for dogs to a very large extent.
Our dogs are closely affiliated genetically to their ancestors, wolves, and they are one of the few true carnivores that exist in the animal planet. Meat makes up a significant portion of their diet and is a hugely important element that is not advisable to be left out totally. Proteins offer by meat are usually too difficult to replace with vegetables and fruits.
While some claims have been made for dogs being able to thrive on diets that consist primarily of tofu that provide plenty of vegetable matter protein. That protein is not high quality enough to be metabolized by your dog. In fact, fresh fruits and vegetables snacks are often recommended for dogs that must lose weight only because these vegetable base snacks add very few calories to your dog's system.
Some humans feel that feeding a meat based diet to your dog is wrong simply because we like to have control of our environment around us, in fact, we impose our wills upon our dogs who really have no choice, since you are the one who bring home the food. Given a choice, a dog would surely choose to eat meat rather than vegetables.
It is important to remember that even if you feel that eating meat is "immoral," your dog has no morality; he is an amoral creature who lives his life based on his desires, not on right or wrong. He eats meat because he needs to eat and it tastes good, not because he believes he has a right to do so or not.
To conclude, if you still choose to feed your dog a vegetarian diet, there are several soy-based diets on the market now. It is recommended that you purchase one of these diets and follow the serving suggestions made by the company strictly. It is also strongly recommended that a veterinarian be consulted before shifting him to a vegetarian diet. Your dog should also make frequent, regular visits to the veterinarian until you are certain that he has adjusted to the new diet.

Probably. A food scientist could easily formulate a food with the proper component ratios to support a dog.
Look at any container of fishfood. They list the fats, proteins, and the less important trace minerals. Only the designer foods will specify component origens.
I work in the dairy industry. In a business setting, milk is not dealt with as milk. It is dealt with in terms fat and protein. As a business professional, my opinion is that the components are all your dog's body needs.
On the other hand, my opinion as a person is that feeding a carnivorous dog vegetarian food is cruel and unusual punishment. Humans are omnivores and even they look skeletal after long periods without meat in the diet. Intuitively speaking, carnivorous dogs need meat.

They can survive but will be denied certain amino acids that can only be sourced from meat that are needed to maintain good skin and coat as well to build muscle tone, and to maintain a strong immune system we as humans are omnivores but compare our teeth to that of a dogs, our teeth are designed for grind vegetable matter much like a cows, so our diets were meant to consist mostly of vegetable matter but dogs have teeth more similiar to cats, the reason is they were designed to eat primarily meat for the task of cutting, tearing and shredding meats, so only makes sense to feed them as they were designed

The oldest dog recorded in the Guinness book of records, was a border collie, who only died last year, at the age of 27 !! Her name was Brambles. Her owner was vegan, and Bramble was raised entirely on a vegetarian diet, of Lentils and rice, with all manner of fresh organic vegetables in season..Bramble's story> http://dogsinthenews.com/issues/0209/articles/020918a.htm
the oldest dog NOW living is very near the age of Bramble. He is a cattle dog from Australia named Jerry. He will soon be 27 years old, and has eaten nothing but kangaroo and emu meat..

Yes dogs can handle a vegetarian diet, visit the PETA website and they have links to pet food companies that make veg dog food. You can Buy veg dog food at petco and petsmart as well. Natures Best is one of the brands. One of my dogs has severe allergies to a lot of the yeasts and grains in regular dog food and this helps with his skin.

Yes, they can survive. Dogs are carnivorous scavengers by nature, meaning that while their diet should ideally be that of a carnivore, they are able to adapt to diets containing grain, vegetables, etc.

Dogs are vegetarian and non-vegetarian. Veg dog can become non-veg but not vice verse.
If a dog who is non veg , is fed veg food he/she will be week and may not survive long.
