Boxing day originally got its name from rich folk boxing up gifts usually food or clothes to give to there servants the day after christmas day. Its an old tradition that died out years ago and i can assure you from being english myself that noone does this any more. People may get gifts or bonuses from employers but it would be done usually the week before christmas not on boxing day. Nowadays boxing day is a day off for most people unless your work in a shop as its also the start of the sales and is more known for that now than anything else. Unfortunately you don't get much boxing on tv boxing day.

Theory is that the boxes placed in churches where parishioners deposited coins for the poor were opened and the contents distributed on December 26, which is also the Feast of St. Stephen.
As time went by, Boxing Day gift giving expanded to include those who had rendered a service during the previous year. This tradition survives today as people give presents to tradesmen, mail carriers, doormen, porters, and others who have helped them.

It is the day after Christmas, the tradition is to box up your old stuff, as you now have new things. Pass on the old to the needy. More recently it gives the stores a chance to recuperate before the on slaughter of returns start coming in.

Got noting to do with pugilism or the sweet science, it's the day after Christmas, a holiday of sorts in Britian where employers give gifts to their employees.
