When you have a rude or nasty customer, call your manager over and ask him/her to deal with the customer.

Well, I am not sure how to answer that without more information on the comments this customer has made to you that you say is nasty. I would like to help you out as much as I can:
1. If she/he is using foul language, you can politely tell her/him that you will get the manager for them. This will take you out of the way without it costing you your job.
2.If they are just asking you questions that you think are stupid because it is just common knowledge , maybe stuff that you think everyone should know automatically. I hate to break it to you , but sometimes we are really ignorant of things that other people know , it sounds silly I am sure but it is true. For instance did you know that when a doctor holds a light by your eye and looks right into the center, they can see your brain. I did not know that, until last month .
3. If you work on a commission, and you need this job , you really need to be polite even if they are rude, obnoxious or just plain foolish. It is tough to do , but when you treat someone nicely even when they are being difficult, you will get the respect that you deserve. Some people do it just to get a rise out of someone, and when you show no emotion and do not react except with friendly politeness, it will irritate and bore them. As long as they are not physical with you ,you will be ok.
Good luck and remain calm.
Sorry , I guess if your left in charge then you need to address the issue with your boss first, ask him how he wants you to handle the situation. If your boss does not give you any advice then make your own judgement call. Just remember that your decision if you like or dislike your boss , will effect his or her business.

Keep dealing with them in a polite yet firm manner. Don't let them dictates what you should feel. It is you who can tell what you should or should not feel. When you have to deal with these kind of customers, think of other funny thing and think of their money. They may hate/dislike the shop, the shoes, but they don't hate you as a person. Keep telling yourself that you always have choices. Make smart choices every morning you wake up :)

I work at a busy deli and have good relations with 90% of the customers. I hate the bad ones, so i feel what you say. What I do is, while Im waiting on a mean one, i will say hello to a nice one and say something like, "I wish I was waiting on you.....the customer now seems a little mean. and wink at the mean one." 2 things will happen. The mean customer will appologige and act nicer or they will say something rude and the nice costomer will stick up for you or comment on thier trashieness.

I work in retail too, and it certainly can frustrate. I think the best method is to kill them with kindness, and make sure you add a heaping of sarcasm, but not so much that they definitely know you're being sarcastic.

"YOU have a GREAAT day", "thank YOU VERY VERY MUCH SIR!" with a way too big kinda crazy grin works, then maybe throw in the odd dirty look. And if they get mad, go back to the over the top friendliness.

it pisses them off but keeps you in the right from an objective stand point.

I have the sam problem at the store where I work. Just keep a smile on your face and try to not let them get to you. I know how hard it can be sometimes but you'll only make yourself miserable if you let those rude people have a big effect on your day. Good luck! Oh and you are right, its always the rude people who spend little money! lol

I had handle people for over nine years, and I found that nasty customers are those whose really interested in your products. If you can convince them, they will normally buy from you, and become a return customer. People normally only turn nasty with the thing they are interested in, thing they are not interested, they won't bother.

Watch all the episodes of "Married.....With Children". Realize you are an Al Bundy. Get another job.

Some people do not have the personality to work with the general public. You can never learn it, it's a gift to be able to ignore idiots.

Find a new job fast or if you can't just be extra nice to the customer or if you can't stand being nice just say "If you feel that way maybe you should do your business with some other store if our merchandise does not satisfy you."

Just remember that it's just a job and you are a happy person.

The people who are rude to you are not happy with themselves or their lifes.

So you win in the end because at least you know you can go to bed at night knowing that you did the right thing by people.
