Well, Los Angeles is the beaches and restaurants area; Fresno is inland, in the valley, an agricultural area, and not the cosmopolitan spot that LA is, of course. Los Angeles speaks for itself. It is a tourist destination itself, from the motion picture studio tours, to lots of entertainment, and great beaches nearby.
But what to do in the Fresno area? Well, it is a daytrip up to Yosemite. If you can manage it, and you have never visited, that is a great excursion. Try and get reservations and tickets in advance, as it becomes crowded at the most desirable times of year. Check out some US National Parks websites, and they can give you the details. Also, if you want to take a day trip out of Fresno west, you can visit Monterey Peninsula, and that is a great tourist excursion, with fine beaches nearby, from Steinbeck country near Salinas to the famous aquarium, and Pebble Beach and lots of great seafood. Another trip for a bit more traveling is the area of San Luis Obispo, and the famous Hearst Castle, home of the mogul newspaper magnate, William Randolph Hearst. It is now a state park, and worth a visit. Tickets are needed there as well. Check out some websites and tourist sites for the area.
Good luck.

There is a mall in downtown that is amazing. It's on a small hill, with a tram to take you up to the mall. When you arrive, you are at the top of a series of steps. Sit down. You will be facing a "singing" waterfall. There is a cafe at the bottom of the steps, if you like. The waterfall cycle is about 20minutes long. Behind the cafe is another set of steps you climb, then you walk to the bottom of the mall. The shops are along the back steps, which are divided by a symbolic mountain stream. A fantastic site to see.
