I assume your question means, "why is English the international language and not something else?"
French used to be the international language of diplomacy and it can still be quite useful in Africa. If you go to South America, you're just as expected to learn Spanish as they would be to learn English.
The biggest reason for English being the international language was the former British Empire and later the US's influence. Think of the former British colonies. The United States, Canada, Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore, South Africa, have all done quite well over the past century. Not all their colonies were successes but many of them were and they were much more successful than say French colonies in Vietnam, Cambodia and Northern Africa. Because these English speaking countries were the richest and most powerful at the birth of globalization, people began to learn English to do business with them. Business with the US especially must be done in English. Canada and the US are two of the largest countries in the world, the US has the 3rd largest population and with the exception of some Spanish in the south and some French in Quebec, they all speak English and haven't had a need to learn a foreign language for several hundred years.
So long as people want to do business with all those countries, people will continue to learn English. You might point out China, but I'll point India who has English as one of their official languages. Who do you think people would rather do business with in the future

They don't. I live in Spain and speak Spanish most of the time, and English with my English speaking friends.

English is not necessary for communication. I have spoken with people in French and German and we seemed to do all right. English is very helpful, however when both speakers are very familiar with it and less familiar with other languages.

...english is the international language...most global businesses communicate with each other in " business english " - which is simply standard english plus the required jargon; depending on the nature of the business....also for travellers knowing english can help them in many countries....the sun never sets on the english language empire!
