That just takes time. It's been literally years and memories still invade my sleep. Though not as often as in the past and the memories don't disturb me as much as they did when they were fresher.

Well you need to go and talk it out with a therapist if you can not do it yourself. Memories do not just go away, they will always be there, even after you have worked through them, that is just part of life. But if they are bothering you that much you need to go and get some professional help and work through them, so that they are not interfering with your everyday life. Also you can learn to look at these memories a different way, as a learning tool in your life, cause you really should be learning something from everything that happens to you in your life, be it good or bad. It is the way you look at it, that is makeing it so bad for you. Try to look at it in a different way. You may be surprise what you can learn from it, and use it to help others.

Your mind is a powerful healer. Instead of trying to ignore the past, rerun the events only this time, change the memory to a happy ending. For example, if someone abused you, mentally "walk" into the memory only this time you, as an empowered adult, address the abuser and deliver a consequence. This is a form of healing the past. The mind knows no difference from fact or fiction so try this. You keep rerunning sad or abusive memories because they have never been resolved. If you are unable to do this, consult a counselor who can help you with this.

You could look at it as "many unfortunate events" in your life. But the truth is...
These are the things that made you what you are today. I'll bet, like myself; you have made lots of mistakes and had your share of personal tragedies. As much as you would like to forget them, or stop dwelling on them, you just can't. These things in your life will make you wiser and more understanding towards others around you.
In time, your pain will ease, your feelings will "evolve," and maybe you will be able to let go of them a little, but you will never forget them.
If you are loosing sleep because of them, then you must try to think of what you are going to do tomorrow, instead of worrying about what happened in the past. Just lay in bed and plan out your day; you'll find yourself falling asleep, or waking up the next morning.

We all have memories and it would always be left in our subconscious mind. However, there are memories which we always remember depending on the intensity of impact in our lives. First, happy memories are good to be remembered and they can even help you fall asleep. But if your memories aren't helping you get to sleep, i pressume that they arenot good and are hunting you night after night. Pls. correct me if I'm wrong.. I have a simple advice for that if you believe on it... PRAYER is the best tool for anything that bothers us. Jesus came to give us peace that the World can not give and He is very much concern about your welfare and He wants to give you a life that would make good memories. So, pray and believe and I assure you that you will be able to let go of your memories... God bless you.

I wish I knew. I still have flashbacks and bad dreams about traumatic experiences I've had. I would even agree to get electro-shocks or a lobotomy if it would erase the bad memories.

that is very hard, i have heard of different things such as writing them all down, and then burning the paper, if you believe in a higher power (mine is God), you can have a long talk with him and give them away for your higher power to take.
I never had much success with the burning but, the giving them away worked for me, I felt so much better.
If you want to talk let me know
