Well, Newport Beach appeals to everyone's taste--- it's one of the wealthiest communities in Orange County....It is about 41 miles from West Hollywood...and frankly not the first place one would think to live if one worked in West Hollywood.. I don't know, You might find the Pacific Palisades area similar and much closer....I am sure people do it every day but that seems like a beeatch of a commute...don't buy anything until you've lived here a while...rent an apartment or house in Newport Beach first.....and test the commute...

That is quite a daily commute. According to MapQuest, the distance from Newport Beach to West Hollywood is 51.5 miles, and the average commuting time would be about l hour and 4 minutes each way. (Subject to serious delays on the freeways during the daily commute time.) That's a lot of commute in L.A. But some people obviously do it each day. You have to decide if the amenities in Newport Beach outweigh the couple of hours each day out of your life, and the driving hassles.
The suggested route (covering generally 40-42 miles freeway driving of the trip) is roughly thus:
8: Merge onto I-405 N toward LONG BEACH. 13.5 miles
9: Merge onto I-605 N via EXIT 24. 10.8 miles
10: Merge onto I-5 N toward LOS ANGELES. 9.8 miles
11: Keep LEFT to take US-101 N toward LOS ANGELES / CIVIC CENTER. 7.7 miles
So, check out some maps and see the route you would have to take. Good luck.

If you work in downtown L.A. or West Hollywood, Newport Beach is out of question as a place to live. It's WAY too far. Consider Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach, Venice, Santa Monica or Marina Del Rey as an alternative if you really feel like you must live by the Ocean.
Frankly, I think living by the Ocean is overrated. It's too crowded and too expensive for what you would get elsewhere in the city of L.A.
If you work in West Hollywood, check out the Beverly/Fairfax area, Miracle Mile or Mid Wilshire. And if you work downtown, consider Silverlake, Los Feliz, Franklin Hills or Eagle Rock.

You can catch the commuter train just about 10 miles north (in Irvine / Tustin) and take the train straight into downtown LA.
I drive from this area along the 405 to Carson, but I wouldn't commute too far past that because this is where traffic builds up. It would be a tough commute for you.

As noted above, the commute can be a headache. But you may find the quality of living in Newport Beach to be worth the commute.

It's a bit of a drive, and you need to really consider if you can stand spending a lot of time in your car. I make a half hour commute everyday to get to my classes, which doesn't bother me much. It really depends on if you believe it's worth it, living in Newport Beach in Orange County (which is a really nice place) instead of living in L.A., which is reasonable if you compare the standard of living of the two areas. The commute is absolutely feasible, you'll be spending most of your driving time on the 5 fwy, a high traffic fwy.

I live in socal and all I can say is you either have to live near your work, or love your car. It really is just that simple. If you live even 15min. away (freeway time on mapquest) that could take a great deal, a great deal, longer during rush hour. My honest advice to you would be stay out of socal if at all possible. Its a nice place to visit, but a major pain in the as* to live in.
