The diamond was most small and the ring was very plain, didn't look like an engagement ring. No rings on her other hand.

If it looks like a an engagement ring, it very well could have been. But I know lots of women who do this all of the time, as they say it, they do it to try and not get bothered when they are out and don't want to deal with getting hit on and stuff.
Whether she is engaged/married or not, either way I would not suggest approaching this. Either you are approaching a girl that is taken, or you are approaching someone who doesn't want approached in the first place.

A plain ring shows marriage too or even a promise ring.
The left ring finger is the finger to show you are taken...so she's taken, sorry buddy.

I'd say if there was a solitare ring on that hand then she's engaged! Doesn't matter how big or small it is.. Maybe the other guy isn't very rich? Doesn't matter!
