Try the drug-free suggestions for a while and see if it works. If not, reconsider medication. Everyone reacts differently to psychiatric medication, so they won't all make you feel like the ones you've tried have. It is possible to find one that works with your body chemistry to make you feel better. Sometimes depression is mostly chemical and medication is the way to go.

Some anti-depressants work better on some people than others. You've had some bad experiences so far but that doesn't mean you won't find one that's right for you. If you are really dead set against trying to find one, ask him/her if you can try hypnotherapy. Through a state of hypnosis, she/he can give you suggestions on how to relax and beat stress. This is just one option. The type of depression will determine its treatment. There are two kinds: situational and endogenous. Situational is depression due to your circumstances that are negatively affecting you. For instance, if you were in a bad marriage with an abusive spouse. Endogenous depression stems from a chemical imbalance in the brain. Anti-depressants in this instance is best because it will supplement the chemicals lacking. Your psychotherapist must think your depression is from a chemical imbalance and that's why he/she is pushing the meds. Exercise is great and will give you a temporary great feeling by releasing endorphins (a feel-good brain chemical). But it's probably not going to be enough to take care of your depression. I would talk to your therapist either about hypnotherapy or seeing a homeopath. This is a person who uses natural herbs and tonics (homeopathy) to treat various maladies. I don't know how well it would work, but what have you got to lose? Another alternative is acupuncture. I think people have tried it for depression. I hope one of these ideas work out for you! Good luck.

I believe that depression is just the way that the individual thinks they feel. A psychotherapist could tell you anything because it's their job, in other words they would be out of a job if they didn't tell you something. Just try having a different perspective on life, and FORGET whatever any doctor tells you. I found that to be the best type of medicine.

It will work if you really exercise a lot and eat well. If it still doesn't work then you probably should take the pills, but honestly if you are exercising regularly and eating well then you should be fine.

If you are willing and committed to get better with the help of other treatment methods (e.g. exercise) then don't and prove this psychotherapist wrong!
