ak-74
a lot more controllable in rapid fire, due to lower recoil. Flatter shooting round, however ammo can hard to locate and is not as cheap a 7.62

The AK 47 is the better choice. The 7.62x39 ammo is more widely available then the 5.45 stuff. The "ballistics" are better with the 7.62 caliber AK, as well. If you're looking for AK74 ballistics, get an AR. Ammo is more readily available.

The 5.46x39 is a lighter round, smaller, but more accurate at distances. The theory in the 1974 update was to compete with the .223 NATO was using .....better range and the fact that each soldier could carry more ammo on his person.

For you, the 5.45 round is harder to find. Right now, 5.45 ammo is comparable to or cheaper than 7.62x39 at $150 or less per 1000......

AK-47 advantage: solid design, respectable caliber, rugged, reasonable price, easy to find ammo. Disadvantage: old design, heavy, new calibers out perform 7.62x39, spotty quality.
AK-74 advantage: lighter, strong, high velocity ammo, good quality. Disadvantage: too new to have reputation, ammo is hard to find, expensive, and even illegal in some places. Rifle is pricey.
