I'm kinda self conscious you see. I have a bit of red acne scarring on my cheeks, although I think they're getting better. Anyways, whenever I'm in the bathroom, I stand in front of the sink when doing my hair, putting moisturizer on, etc. When my mom or one of my siblings come into the bathroom to use the sink, I tend to stop what I'm doing and wait to use the mirror for that spot instead of moving to the side. The reason for this is cause my face doesnt look as red and messy in front of the sink. Also, theres a bathroom at my church that usually has a door opened leading outside. For that reason, light isnt really needed. And when I look into the mirror in it, my face looks a lot better, not that red at all. Other public inside bathrooms have the same kind of light as my bathroom and therefore have the same effect.
Do certain lights amplify redness? And how do i know what I really look like? Does it depend on the lighting? Do mirrors show the exact reflection of reality?

Yes. Light has a profound effect on how you look. Flourescent lights have a harsh specturm- it is very near sunlight's spectrum but is so strong and saturated that most people don't look their best in it. Halogen lights are slightly green, so you would look less reddish in halogen light. Normal household lights are closer to red spectrum. Chromalux light bulbs mimic sunlight but in a more flattering way than do flourescents. I suspect that what's going on with your sink is that the light's shining directly down on you and bouncing back up from the sink show you a flattering view because the light bounces around a bit and might not be as harsh.

Honestly it's very hard to know what you really look like. Beauty really is in the eye of the beholder. I, for instance am attractive, but take HORRIBLE photos. the flash brightens my pallor so much that I look like a ghost. Most people look best in dim light, but some people look really good in sunlight. What is the real them? It's all the real them. We all have things we'd like to downplay, and things we like to make more noticeable. If you want to know for sure how you look, I find that a movie is the best way to find out. A still shot doesn't show all angles. How you move and act is also part of how you look. A film will show you all this.

Good question!
Sometimes I think I look good when I see my reflection in a mirror then when I see myself in a photo wearing the same outfit with the same makeup etc. i can look so terrible i almost scare myself!! Whats going on with that??

Yes different lights make your skin appear different. Some seem to bring blemishes out and some hide them.

As for finding out how we really look. I guess we could never know. All people see each other differently!

Confused? i am!

Yes, the type of light (or source to be exact) is what matters. to best diagnose your skin would be under indirect sunlight. Florecent light always makes things worse when you look at your skin (thats why doctors use them so they'd notice the slightest impurity or problem). the soft orange-like light always makes the skin better (if you look at studios you'd know what I mean).

as for mirrors reflections, I don't they they really reflect reality a 100%. the purity of the glass makes a HUGE difference. check the diffrence between regular glass and crystal glass (found in bigger stores). You'd notice HUGE difference in light reflection and clarity.

Different kinds of light source have different color spectra, so certain colors will appear more or less prominent. Incandescent bulbs have a 'yellower' spectrum which may emphasize dark colors including red. Fluorescent light has a 'bluer' spectrum and tends to make most objects appear whiter or even washed out.
