I am writing a paper and id lke to know what the symbol of Aum would mean to other people and how they tie it into their everyday lives to keep them going.

i don't know the literal meaning, but to me it is the sound of the universe.
it always makes me feel more peaceful.

Om is the primordial essence of the Divine, encompassing his creative, preservative, and destructive abilities. This is demonstrated by each part of the mantra Om, where the beginning (ohhhh) is creative, middle (hhhmm) is preservative, and end (mmmmm) is destructive.
I'm not sure I'd use "ohm" as an alternate spelling, it reminds me too much of the units of resistance.

Its an universal sound. The Earth Ohms as the Universe Ohms. You don't need to make the sound yourself, just listen and you will hear it.

To me it means - "The good person makes no distinctions between friend and foe, brother, sister or stranger, but regards them all with equality."
If you look - you'll find that all of the major religions discuss something about how we should treat our fellow beings. I think it's so important to concentrate on the things that religions have in common!
