if it's a simple case of "the blues" then, yes they can. however if they have depression, they need help, and quite possibly medication. depression is a serious illness. it controls every aspect of the depressed person's life. the depressed person is often isolated. not because of others, but because normal people feel it's a copout. it's not. if you find yourself feeling down, try to think positive. if the depressed feelings last much more than a couple of days, talk to someone.

came back to see more answers. i've got depression too and every bit of info helps me. just saw your additional comments. if you are isolating yourself, and it feels natural, you most likely have depression. it might also be accompanied by acute anxiety. the two often go hand in hand. i really hope you decide to get help. believe me, it's no fun fighting this disease on your own. and if you don't get help it WILL GET WORSE. the recovery is hard, but living with depression is impossible.
best wishes and good luck.

I have been suffering from post partum depression for the past one year when I gave birth to a baby boy. I couldn't stop thinking about how my husband loves him more than me and how things might be better if he wasn't born at all. Thus, I stayed away from him because I knew that I might do something I will regret for the rest of my life.

Almost instantly I went to a therapist and convince them that I need help. Among other things, I've tried herbal supplements and other book to treat depression but nothing works like the Depression Free Method. So now I'm proud to say I'm one of the happiest mother in the world. My husband loves us both very much and I thank the Lord for the blessing he gave us.

Depression Free Method?

Certain types of depression can be overcome with just time, when the depression is situational (caused by a particular event). Chronic or severe depression cannot be overcome by thinking positively (or watching a movie called "the secret"). If you're starting to isolate yourself and feeling like it's a natural thing to do, you should see a doctor. You can't "cure" depression, but prescription drugs are very effective in helping one cope with it. Group or individual counseling and/or behavioral training is also essential.

In addition to meds/counseling, exercise and sleep are very important. Try to learn a relaxation method that works well for you also. Yoga is a good way to combine exercise and relaxation.

It's very hard to be motivated when you're depressed, so ask a very close, trusted friend or relative to help you seek help. I wish you the best.

I want to believe that we can overcome most things by ourselves---as long as we are aware of our own "disorder". Manic depressives have to have severe depression for a period of 6 months or more. Is this you? You were not specific. Ask yourself this question: Is the glass half full (optimism), or is it half empty (pessimism)? Well, the answer is BOTH. We are only human and are affected by our environment---but have to keep ourselves in "check" and not allow it to dictate our thoughts and behavior. I know, easier said then done!!!

I've been suffering from depression for at least 6 years. I've come to accept it as a part of me. Keeping a positive attitude is a good start, but the deeper depression gets the more likely your family would want you to get on medication. I realised that meds weren't for me and that when my life is good my depression is a lot easier to tolerate. Usually depression just means your life isn't where you think it should be and you just gotta work to get it there. Good luck!!! :-D

Anna, you need other people in your life. Would you consider joining a church group? These people care about you and love you. Go to activities, mingle, have fun, volunteer and get to know and help others. There are many other people going through the same thing as you are. You will be helped and you can help them too. There are also, licensed Christian counselors who can help you. God bless

Wow! I am in almost the same exact predicament. Being alone is the absolute worst thing you can do!! You must find a healthy balance between being alone and sharing your time with others. And thinking positively will ABSOLUTELY help. Look into Cogntive therapy.. The world is how you perceive it.

Yes. It depend on individual will power. If situation is really bad, it will be better if you seek help from friends or counselor. Depression is only temporary. If depression last too long it will be serious. To overcome depression you will need to identify the facts or real problems that you are really facing. Face all these problems and lets your mind, body & soul rest well. By thinking postively and looking at brighter side of life helps. The key to get rid of depression is to accept the fact or things that had already happened. Just tell yourself everything will be fine.

It definitely helps to think pos. It can actually help your mood. But if you find yourself depressed often try to talk to someone about it. Perhaps a school counselor or if you're out of school than talk to your doctor and see what he/she suggest. Your doctor could suggest counseling or send you to a psychiatrist to be evaluated.
