Trying to brainstorm different perspectives...any ideas are appreciated

The war had just ended and the characters lives were in turmoil and directionless. They partied to convince themselves they were having a good time. That's the tragedy of the story.

Aren't you supposed to write what you know? Wasn't Hemmingway an alcoholic? The book is about regret and denial--and so are many things or instances where alcohol is involved.
Alcohol reduces ones inhibitions, but only temporarily, and then you face reality.
I haven't read the book in years, but I did read it a few times, it is one of my favorites.
I'd say it is almost another character in the book. They are constantly drinking and turn to this distraction for the reasons above.

It's been a long time since I've read it, but wasn't it about war? War has a huge alcoholism rate. He wanted to be there, but alcohol was the only way to handle what he saw. And it continued through the rest of his life. Some people also say that drinking makes them more creative. He wanted to write but was caught in the middle of a terrible situation so he drank and wrote to escape the pain.

Hemminway was a drunk from hell hes a tuff one to try to figure out.......i wrote a paper on him in college but im having a brain fart right now......it suxs getting old
