You must look into your own soul to see if there is a way for the two of you to remain friends IF you decided to have your relationship break up.
Look at it in this manner. A friend will always be there until the end. A broken relationship is something that is almost impossible to ever mend.
My advice to you would be to try getting along as extremely close friends but not as boyfriend and girlfriend. Your two roles will try to overlap and it will be hard for to figure out which one is real. Look very hard at it first before saying anything. PLEASE !!

i love a girl at school. we were just friends. i asked her out. it didn't work out. tears were shed. we're still friends. but i don't know, my situation is really abnormal. even now, we are "just friends", but she can't stop talking to me (calls/emails EVERYday). either way, your relationship will never be the same again. he loves you, he knows you know, it will just be weird. whatever answer you give, you will never be friends the same way again.
