I would definitely not reccomend a first time owner get a Shepherd, they are very headstrong working dogs and not for the inexperienced trainer in most cases... great dogs but a real handful, big, powerful, intelligent, energetic... all good traits for sure but they are a real handful for the first timer. I would tell you to get a medium breed dog something less powerful and driven.. maybe something like a Brittany Spaniel.. http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/brittany.htm
or a Cardigan/Pembroke Welsh Corgi... http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/cardigancorgi.htm
http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/pembrokecorgi.htm
Really though it depends on your personal lifestyle.. and what you are looking for in a dog, I suggest browsing through some breed profiles at this site.. http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/purebred.htm
Research a breed extensively for yourself before making the commitment to get a dog, that way you will be able to find a dog that is right for your situation and make sure your home will be suitable for the breed of dog.. some need more space than others, etc etc.

I used to train dogs for obedience/attack. Much of what you want, depends on the family. How old are the children? How many? If they are over 8, I would say a German Shepard. They have a very nice temperament and are not as likely to turn on the child. They also provide the child with protection at night when they are out and about. If the children are mostly around the 3-7 years of age, group, Shelties are nice. They are active and will play "chase the ball" for hours. But for the over-all, well-rounded dog, the Shepard.

Pers. Exp. If you live somewhere that doesn't allow barking dogs, or if you will have to walk the dog in a park (will not have a yard of it's own or you are in an apartment) Then go for the Basenji!
We lived in a Rural area for a while and then moved into a big city, and the basenji was GREAT in both places. Very clean. Very Quiet...usually... :) and I am going to have another someday. Hopefully soon.
Hope this helps.

I have never had a dog in my life till my husband decided to get a Siberian Husky. I have to say I was scared at first, but turned out to be the best thing ever. Sweet, loving dog.
I always wanted a small dog but I would never change my husky for the world. I don't know if husky fits your lifestyle 'cause they need room to run and such but I think it's a great choice.

The dog you get should be based on your lifestyle (activity level, living arrangements, etc.)
Go to www.pedigree.com and click on Dogs & Pups - then SELECT A DOG
This quiz will give you a short list of the types of dogs that fit your lifestyle best. Then you can research rescues and shelters to see if there is a dog you can give a loving home.

Go to the pound and have fun dog shopping! Make sure it's a compatible dog that suits your family's needs. Also check out petfinder.com for a local rescue or shelter near you!
Plus, rescuing a dog is setting a wonderful example for your children (if you have them!) or simply saving an otherwise forgotten dog.

i have 3 dogs and there wonderful breeds i have a half golden retriever and half yellow lab but i wouldnt suggest them because although friendly there also alittle agressive and they have very bad health problems at a young age. i also have a jack russell terrier very fun dog to have! there very energetic and playful and there very friendly and a all around good dog to have. i also have a corgi puppy shes very friendly and playful as well and such a beautiful dog! both the jack russell and corgi were 700 dollars but there defintely worth every dollar trust me no complaints in any way from them id recommend a jack russell or a corgi!

the dog you want has to fit in with your family style. My family dog was a Australian shepard, spaniel mix. She was just the right size, medium, and a wonderful companion, good with the kids, and a great watchdog, also very smart. Labs are great dogs for families also.
