If you eat healthily and continue to run track, you'll lose weight. Just basic nutrition and excercise. It doesn't sound like you need to lose weight for anything but running, so unless to plan to run track as a career, I wouldn't stress too much about it.

I've seen a lot of girls lose weight to run faster. It worked for a bit and then they started getting injured, and passing out.

It sounds like your coach is encouraging anorexia, which is very common especially among distance runners. A better way to run faster would be to train hard and eat healthy, if your BMI is 20 you don't need to lose weight!

Tell your coach to kiss your ***. i mean that in the nicest way possible. Weight is not your problem, your coaches attitude is. If you strength train, speed train, eat healthy, etc. your body will find it's right weight. If you weighed 220 and your coach told you that I'd say, gee, maybe he wants you to be healthier and is concerned about your health. But 120 at 5'5"? He is seriuoslly screwed in the head. I battled bulimia for 7 years. It started when my cross country coach told me I looked fat. I lost the weight, ran faster and got really sick. I was kicked off the team for being unhealthy, skinny and in need of medical attention. This is not the road you want to go down. Be strong, train hard and don't you dare listen to your coach. Prove to HIM that you can remain your happy self at the same weight and run faster by training more- not losing weight. Sure, you might lose weight by training hard but to lose weight in order to run faster? Just plain stupid. Stay strong- good luck.

Your coach has only given you 25% of the story. Yes by losing weight you will theoretically run faster....but if you lose the muscle to move you along, how will that make you faster?

A good circuit weight training program will help keep your muscles toned and burn the fat off, the running will keep your circulatory system and your lung capacity in tip top shape...

Going to a kinesthesiologist will also help you, there are speed clinics that dtermine your current technique and suggest new habits based on scientific data.

I can't understand why your coach told you that. Seriously. That sounds unhealthy.

Look up information on your BMI, or Body Mass Index.

Your BMI is 20 at your weight and height. A BMI for a healthy woman is 18.5-24.9. As it is you are on the low end for a healthy female.

I'm 5.1 and 115. And I still look rather thin. You're 4 inches taller.

I would trust your doctor on this over your coach. Talk to your doctor and see what they say. Track is not worth losing your health.

I played basketball in High School and what we would do is were leg weights. This made it so that when we were in a game we ran faster because we didn't have the extra weight. Even if you only add 10 pounds you will feel the difference. I think you are fine with your weight. One of the fastest girls on your team was one of the centers. she was like 6' and 175.

Don't focus on losing weight. Focus on being a faster and better runner and your ideal running weight will come along naturally.

I've lost 5 kilos in my first week. It's my 10th day and I have included salad with some protein (eg. egg/ lean chicken) as you suggested. After 4 years of trying, the fat is finally coming off. It truly feels like magic!

Get started today!
