That is a really good question.
I have not yet asked any religious questions.
I do, however, read through a lot of other peoples answers. I'm very curious of others opinions on the topic!

It seems that some religious people cannot accept any evidence whatsoever that their beliefs might be wrong, especially when that evidence is derived from the bible (or whatever religious book they follow). They simply ignore it and choose a best answer that is most patronizing to them. I asked a similar question about why people give thumbs down to logical, reasonable answers backed by supporting evidence because it seemed to me they do so based on how closely it resembles their own opinion. Also, some people ask questions that they, in their own minds, already know the answer to but want to see others agree with them. They're not looking for answers- they're looking for approval!

I am seeking points of view, beliefs, the reason why they feel or believe as they do. The who, what, when, where, how and why of things. I want their information and ideas. I may pick the answer that I feel is more closely akin to mine but that doesn't mean I discount the other answers.

I believe they are seeking agreement with their opinion so they can bolster their own belief. It is obvious all over these boards that the majority of the time, askers select answers based on their own beliefs, not those of the party they are asking.

Truly seeking others opinions, I posted a "why do atheists frequent these boards so much" question and I got an answer that had a video attached to it and after I watched the video I shut the hell up and picked him for best answer.

Depends on whether it's a silly question or a serious one.
Serious ones, yes I do pick the person I thought had the most well thought out answer. Silly questions, I pick who made me laugh the most.

I give the Best Answer to the person who backs up their opinion with the best evidence and reasoning.

Great question!
I find it fascinating to see how many people just want to hear themselves. The fact that someone might echo their opinion only serves to affirm their ego.

I rarely ask questions on religion or politics, because I am afraid that I would let my own opinions influence me.
