My little one spiked a quick fever w/ no other symptoms. It got up to 101.5 w/ ear thermometer. It took over an hour for the infant advil to bring her fever down and three hours later, it's back up. She's been exposed to a bunch of kids w/ strep throat, BUT she has no presenting symptoms, and it was over a week ago that she was exposed. She's never been sick before, and I'm not a panicy mom, I have three other kids, but just curious as to what others thought. 101.5 is not a super high fever, but I am a little worried. thoughts?? Thanks in advance and God bless.

not pulling on ear, good thought though. Not complaining about anything, not fussy, just sleepy more often and wanting to nurse more.

You're right that is high enough to be concerned about. Besides another round of baby advil you might try a bottle or sippy cup with pediolite or water. If she likes popscycles or fruit pops this would be a good time for one. Mashed up frozen fruit might help cooler her down too. Generally a really sick child looks and acts sick as I am sure you know but any persistant fever over 100 is worth a call and probably a visit to the doctor if it is still going up tomorrow and of course if it gets over 102 and the advil and maybe a sponge off with luke warm not cold water don't bring it down pretty quickly you're headed for the ER. Prayer helps too of course. I hope she'll be well by morning.

A fever is a symptom that tells you there is an infection somewhere. 101.5 isn't awful high, but it is defiantly a fever. If your little one was exposed to Strep, I would take her in. With Strep the fever will only go higher and you have other children to consider. Did you know in your Mom's time, before penicillin, well, maybe your grandma's time, if anyone had strep the house was quarantined? That was because people actually died before penicillin. At least call her pediatrician.

If she has been exposed to strep, there is a possibility that she has that...but that fever isn't that awfully high. She may be developing an ear infection...does she pull her ear or rub it? Take her to the pediatrician and tell him what she has been exposed to and have her check her out...it's worth the dollars to be sure your little one doesn't have strep or doesn't need antibiotics...ear infections are nasty!

You can also put her in a lukewarm tub of water to play and this will help the fever (keep the room warm though)...also a popsicle or cold pedialyte...anything you can get her to drink that will bring it down.. Stay away from Tylenol, if you can...this might just be a virus.

Anything over 100 degrees warrants a trip to the doctor, especially if she's been exposed to strep. A cold can cause a low fever, but generally over 100 means it's not a cold. Even if it's not strep, it's flu season, so I'd definitely get her checked out.

A 16 month old isn't able to actually tell you what is wrong, so it is best to consult your pediatrician, to diagnose the problem.
