well if you search for WACO in the Internet, you will find out that religion is a way to control many people...
The Waco Massacre where the FBI killed more than 80 people who thought that Jesus Christ had come (the second coming)
can you believe that? they died because they thought that he was Jesus how pathetic was that?

I will tell you a story. You have to imagine that you are the central character.
You have been tasked with two chores today. One is to babysit a room full of 50, yes, that's fifty, 6 yr olds. They have been provided with lots of toys and stuff to keep them busy.
You also have to complete a second task which means that you cannot be in that room with them.
So, you go in to see them and you see that they are all playing happily and then you go to the other place and start your long and difficult task.
After a while, you hear screaming and crying coming from the kids, so you go in to investigate. Being 6 yr olds, they will have some sort of conflict before too long. Perhaps one wants a toy that the other one is playing with and a fight erupts. You calm them all down and tell them that they must behave properly. They nod in agreement and return to their playing. You leave the room.
After another short while, the same thing happens. You do the same. The result is the same - temporary peace.
On the third such occasion, you realise that you will have to resort to subterfuge. The answer is in a lie. They will believe you so you fabricate a lie.
You tell them that you have a friend. He is invisible. He is watching them all the time and he talks only to you. If there is any further trouble, the invisible friend will tell you who is bad and who is good. The good ones will get ice-cream and chocolate, the bad ones will not get anything but a good slapping.
So, you have now sewn fear, a reward/punishment system and you have created control.
Recognise anything?

That religion is a good way to brain wash people. Religion hits a person on many levels - and is part of their daily life. Their morals, their guilt, their actions can all be based on religion.
Some unscrupulous people have used religion in order to control people. They use the guilt, and man made teachings and laws in order to get people to behave the way they want.
I don't think all religions are like this - but they all have the possibility of being used in this way. Of being corrupted.

They mean exactly what they say. Christianity is a good example. Christianity only took off after Constantine saw it as a way to unite and control the Roman Empire.

I love my Savior Christ Jesus, but I'm sorry to say i agree with some of these answers. Man has his own agenda and spreads it in the name of God sometimes...having said that i believe God is still in control whilst leaving His people to go about His business..many get it right and many get it wrong. For those with their own agenda, He will at some point step in and say no more. I know many faith believing people who wont be controlled I'm glad to say...

Say the government created religion. They spread around a rumor that there was a God above that chose our fate at death. If we were good little human beings and paid our taxes, Then we could go to heaven. But if we were bad little humans and say.. tried to destroy the government, We'd go to hell.
