Buying a dog can be a big commitment, like taking on a baby. You have to ask yourself if you would like to get an older dog or a puppy. With a puppy you have to potty train them and teach them some basic manners like sit and stay. The convenience to having an older dog is that they are usually already trained and know how to poop outside. The bad thing with older dogs is that you did not raise them so you dont know their personalities.
As far as dog breeds go would you prefer a smaller sized breed or larger. Online they have some really good tests that help you pick a specific breed that suits you lifestyle.
Good luck picking you pet, it will bring a lot into your life.

It depends on whether you like a big dog or small dog. Do you have time to spend with a dog, do you have a big yard or do you live in an apartment complex where the dog would be inside all day. Big dogs wouldnt be good because they need lots of room to roam around and some small dogs are hyper have health problems and easy to injure so you must research your choice carefully. Go to the library and also consider your own personality. If you are a nurturing person then a dog would be great. If you are emotionally detached the a cat is good. It depends on you. Ask questions to a Vet. Consider the cost of caring for the dog. Shots, ect... Why are you getting a dog? Do you have kids? Do you live in a noisy neighborhood? Is your home pet proof? Bottom line do some research and carefully consider your options.

Go to www.selectsmart.com/DOG . It is a compatibility test based on what characteristics in a dog that you want (appearance, temperament, activity level, etc.) Be sure you are ready for the commitment of having a pet: vet visits, food, license and registration fees, training. It's worth it if you find the right dog. Good luck!!!
