...on my chest, stomach and even my hips and butt and a little on my thighs. The pharmacist where I work said there is a 10 or 30% chance I might be allergic to this because I am allergic to SULFA drugs. Hives have been going on for 3 weeks now...does anyone think I am breaking out from the drug?

HCTZ= Hydrochlorathiazide.

Well did you eat or bathe in anything different? Did you use a new laundry detergent? You have to think about what you have done or used that might cause the rash.

It could be HCTZ - I take it - I am allergic to sulfa drugs but I have had no problems on it and I take a much bigger dose than you do.

It does say on the paperwork I got with my tablets that if you are allegic to Sulfa you may not be able to take the HCTZ; there is some sulfa in it somehow.

When my doctor gave me the prescription he told me that he thought my allergy to Sulfa would probably not be a problem but it could be so to be cautious if any rash appeared and to call him. I have been on it about 8 months and I have had no problems.

I am not a pharmacist but I too take HCTZ 25mg. I have taken it on and off for hypertension for several years without any allergic out break. And as my doctor knows I am allergic I would hope he has the medical training to know the relationship between sulfa drugs and HCTZ. I would check with your doctor of course and stress the time interval involved...2 months seems like a long time before a reaction would kick in. The one time I took a sulfa based drug years ago I broke out in a major rash with itching...but not hives....within 24 hours. Good luck.

If the side effects coincide with when you started to take the drug, or a short time after, there is a high likelihood that it is caused by the HCTZ. There are alternative drugs, that I don't believe are Sulfa based. If you've consulted your doctor about this, and your doctor did not offer an alternative, speak with a local pharmacist for suggestions, then reconvene with your doctor. Otherwise, try to think of other things that may be causing your hives, such as soaps and detergents you've been using, that you weren't using before the hives appeared. In some cases, food allergens may be the cause, and perhaps something you didn't used to eat is the cause. That's my two cents for ya.
