My friend says he thinks he has a mild case of Carpal Tunnel. I asked if it tingles and he says no. So I don't think that's the case.

He says after he has lifted something, it has spasmed a few times. He also says he can't lift like he used to and it's been like that for a while. At times it hurts a lot. It depends on if he's done a lot of work. He has a wrist support.

He can't go to the doctor yet because he doesn't have insurance. He will next month though.

So in the meantime, what do you think the problem is?

There are so many thing going on in your wrist it could be any number of things. If he runs a thumb down his arm to the wrist he should feel little bumps where it's spasming and can tell which muscle is causing the problem which will help pinpoint the source. Arthritis and fibromyalgia can cause wrist spasms. Muscle spasms can also be caused by overuse of a certain muscle and lactic build up. Drink plenty of water and try massaging the whole area. Apply compresses and alternate hot and cold. Cold reduces any swelling and heat increases bloodflow to the area. Chances are one will feel better than the other and that can be good clue to tell the doctor. Massage, water and possibly some ibuprofen will help him get through until he sees a doc anyway. Good luck with it!

It could be a form of nerve compression. Carpal tunnel is one type where the median nerve is compressed at the wrist but there are other compression sites. Nerve compression can cause pain and weakness. Wearing a wrist support that is not prescribed by a doctor can further weaken the already weak muscles, so only have him wear it if it is absolutely necessary. In the meantime tell him to cut back if not stop repetitive activity with that hand, that may be the cause of the problem. Good luck.

I have carpal tunel in both wrist and sometimes it hurts like that so its very possible thats what he has even with out the tingling. I just went and had a emg done and they said I have sever nerve damage in my left hand not sure what caused it yet half to go see a surgeon next week about it but for right now tell him to keep wrist guards on as much as he can to protect and message it a little after work it kindda makes it feel better in a way. He can do that untill he can get to a doctor.

I am not a DR. I can not really diagnose your friend.
Although 6 months ago I hurt my wrist. I had never really had any trouble with it be for. It hurt to movie it a certain way or twist it just right Ext... I saw the Dr. They did an x-ray and looked at it. All they told me was that I had arthritis. I am 23 years old now and I get flair ups more often now then be for so he may have been right.
I would tell your friend to help relive the symptoms try regulating between warmth and cold( Ice pack or heating pad) what ever feels best for him) He could even try soaking it or tailing an aspirin. If it gets worse to come in and have it looked at.
I hope he feels better soon.
Good luck to the both of you

Pain of carpal tunnel often wakes people up in middle of night. Have him hold his arm out in front of him, palm is veritcal (not palm up or palm down), next have him touch tip of thumb to area of palm just below pinky and close fingers to make a fist with thumb still inside between palm and fingers. Now have him move his wrist and wrist only towards his face, pain?? Now have him move it the complete opposite way, does it reproduce the pain?? Is it like a lightening strike?? If pain occurs with move wrist downwards towards toes, suggests tendonitis. Needs to wear splint and take aleve or ibuprofen, not both. Just a possibility, not a diagnosis. Takes about 6 weeks to clear up. I have suffered with it off and on for years. Tendonitis caused by overuse, not repetitive use like carpal tunnel.

There is a condition that is called focal dystonia that causes a spasm after movements. Carpal can cause hand weakness and over use may cause discomfort. A herniated cervical disc may cause hand and forearm problems. Also joint and ligament strain is possible
Use antiinflammatories and a splint at nights and rest the hand if possibe

It's possible he does have carpal tunnel. It could also be a nerve disorder.
