You know terra cotta pots for planting? Just but a very small saucer (that you would put under a planter) and use that. I got mine for like $0.89 at the Wal-Mart Garden center (when I used to shop there!). Take it home, wash it, soak it in water for about 20 mins and put in an airtight container with your brown sugar! My sugar was rock hard and the next day after I did that it was perfectly soft again... beats spending $10 for one from a kitchenware store!!!
Heres a pic for you: http://www.morninnoonannight.com/Photographs/Misc/images/terra-cotta-pots_jpg.jpg

Best of luck!!!

At our house we have a little "tera-cota" teddy bear that we got from the store that we soak in water and then a few days later place in the sealed container with the brown sugar. It keeps the brown sugar nice and moist for quite a while. I think we've had the same brown sugar for about a year now and it's still soft. Every few months you have to re-moisturize the tera cota but it's good to go!

I find the clay bears work best, you can find them at any specialty kitchen store. Also, Dominoes brown sugar has directions on the back of the bag to fix hard sugar, I think you put a wet towel on it over night or microwave it with a wet paper towel for a few seconds.

The sliced apple and slice of bread work great. There are also these little clay disks you can buy that keep the brown sugar moist when you wet them and put them in the container.

Go to a housewares store like Bed, Bath and Beyond to the kitchen department, and look for the small reddish-brown clay/terra cotta bear that is labelled for use in keeping brown sugar soft. Put the brown sugar in an airtight container and follow the use instructions for the little bear. It works, too.

Try a sliced apple or some bread in a zip lock bag and without locking the bag, roll the air out of it to the zipper and then seal it shut.

The terra cotta bear is what I use...cuter than having bread slices, soda crackers, orange peel whatever else out there that works in your brown sugar container.

I've heard it suggested to stick a piece of stale bread in there as it helps to absorb excess moisture.
