What career path do you want to follow?
Many technical books may be written in German first, adn only translated to English after a year or so. You could be ahead of other people in your field just because you can keep abrest of advanced techniques before the rest of the English speaking world knew it even existed.
Even if you want to break into filming, or behind the camera work, many location shots in Germany or Austria may need a trusted person to be on site.
A second (or third) language is best at times you least expect.
Good luck

To the other answer English is a Germanic language. It is not derived from French,Spanish or Italian.
As for your question, in California, Spanish would be more useful than German, all the German's I know speak English and we do not have a large Germany population. If you want to go overseas or work for a German company.
Beyond that I think if you want to learn German more power to ya. It doesn't have to be for practical reasons.

Just to be able to say that you learned the language. Also you could throw anyone off who spoke spanish and or english by coming out with german. They wouldnt know what you were saying. It could help if you didnt want to talk to someone. You could pretend that all you spoke was german. It wouldnt be so bad if german was a prettier sounding lang. but to be honest it doesnt sound very nice. Look up how to say Thick in german. It is rather stupid but kind of funny at least to me.

If you want to do business with Germany, translate German documents/texts/films/etc., advertising/marketing, or for any travel-related area, German is useful.
Your location does not really matter if you are want to work with a foreign language. There are opportunities everywhere, and certainly in California!

it wouldn't....take spanish...if you already speak spanish and english, take french or italian...it would be easier to learn since all three are latin derived languages. Italian or French would be just about as useful as german, but you would get more out of learning a language that you can relate to the one's you already know.
