Today I found a cut on my cats tail.Upon a closer look I see somthing that looks like fishing string comming from the cut.I gently pull it and it starts to come out and then stops.I see another end of what looks like the same thing and gently pul it and it slids also.I call my friend who is a nurse and ask her if she has any clue what this could be.(she and her sister live on the same road I do,its a private country road)She tell me her sister who lives next to ma had been fishing and left the poles out and maybe the cat had gotton caught in one.So I look at her wound again and see a small hole on the other isde of her tail and it looks to be as that is what happened.So my fiance comes in and we slightly pul on one end,its slides out easily and is about 4in long.The other seems to be stuck.Im talking her to the vet tomorrow,but I want to know could this be a nerve we are pulling?My cat doesnt seem to care while we are messing with it,but all our cats are very laied back as it is.

I called the sister and asked how big her hooks were,she said that they were big enough to see if one was stuck.I just want to know reall if this could be a nerve ending,it is now starting to fray as a string would.This is MY cat out of the 4 we have,she is almost a year old.I love all our cats,be she is my heart and soul and I am just very upset.Being a dog groomer Ive seen alot of odd things,but none like this.Any nice words or idea would help while im waiting to bring her to the vet.

The cut is about an 1in and a half long,it doent bleed much and is not like a puncture wound,more like a broken slit i would say...I know this is long,im sorry,thanks in advance!

Just to make things clear,it wasnt my fishing gear,it was my neighbors,she has it in the back of her husbands truck.There is no hook in it.I know how to keep it clean and what not,(animal groomer) but im just not sure what it is.I always get upset over small things when it comes to my animals.I am taking her to the vet first thing in the morning :)

it's probably a tendon. Tendons are thin resilient strings, and could be mistaken for fishing line.
If the injury was bad enough, a tendon could have been severed, leaving the unattached end free. Tendons are stretchy, and you can pull them out quite a ways. Luckily, they don't happen to be attached to a lot of nerves, so it shouldn't have been too painful, but it's not good as it can lead to infection (the tissue moving in and out).
Nerve tissue would be a lost softer, and would break.
Edit; (ps. my sister AND my mother are RNs, which doesn't translate to vet, but I helped my sister through her homework every night in college. Don't worry. The worst that is going to happen is you'll have a bob tailed cat. I hope the best for you and the kitty.)

Well, it does seem like it is a fishing line. If it isn't hurting him though, then it probably hasn't damaged any nerves. Getting it checked out by a vet is the best thing to do though. Keep an eye on it. It doesn't sound like it's infected though. You will probably be given instructions on how to keep it clean, and maybe some antibiotics, but it's nothing life threatening. If it's cut deep into the tail though, they may have to remove part of the tail, which would be best. Only the vet knows what should really be done. Hope this helps.

By all means, you need to take your cat to the vet tomorrow. The string you were pulling it seems to be just that - a string (not a nerve - you cannot even touch that without th cat yowling and scratching you like crazy!). The injury is not immediately life-threatening, but it has to be looked at by the vet in case there is more string left or if there is a hook embeded in the tail. If left unattended, the cat can lose her tail and the subsequent infection CAN be life-threatening.

I dont know about cats but dogs have an artery in the tail. Be very careful with her until you get her to the vet and keep her close so that little string doesnt get caught on anything. Wishing you all the best with your cat. Hope you get this fixed tomorrow.

did kitty eat the hook or is it caught in her tail??? if it is caught in her tail, bring it thru as if you were sewing a stitch----FIND THE HOOK. if you cannot find the hook, take kitty for xrays to make sure kitty didnt swallow the hook. kitties clean up after their people--ALWAYS put your things away if they will harm kitty.
