There is no one answer to this question. There are probably whole books written on "take down" techniques (actually I know there are). Obviously the best method would be a gun, but I'm assuming you're referring to hand to hand combat. Here are a few:
Knees: kick the bottom of the kneecap with the toe of your foot, several times if necessary. This should completely dislodge the kneecap and crumple your opponent to the ground. If you are behind the person kick the back of their knee multiple times, wont remove the kneecap, but will bring them down anyway.
Shins: kick you opponents shins multiple times while either pushing or punching them in the chest. A few good whacks to the shins will make a persons' legs incredibly sore and hard to stand on, and if that person is being punched or shoved at the same time; good luck standing up.
Larynx: If you are fighting in a life and death situation you can kill a person easily by punching them in the larynx, that's the part of your throat below your adams apple. A few good punches to that part of the throat and you will crush the larynx, eventually killing the individual. This person will NOT be standing after this occurs.
Sternum: the middle part of your chest where the top crest of your ribs are can knock the wind out of a person when punched hard. Your ribs make an upside-down "V" on your chest, the crest of this "V" is the point I'm talking about. If you've ever had the wind knocked out of you, you know how difficult it is to even move, let alone stand up.
There are lots of others. You should probably look on a martial arts supply store or on Amazon.

Get a spring loaded baton and clock him across the skull. What you're talking about is a street fight, and the overriding principle here is victory before honor. Just remember, using a weapon is a serious charge in the eyes of the law and will exponentially raise the danger level of the fight- he's going to feel very justified in returning the favor.
Besides that, a shot to the throat is always good. But be fast; smacking him in the side of the neck will just get him ticked at you.

The most successful way I've seen work time and time again is with a well trained group of Swat, Marines, rangers, or seals. They tend to go in as a group and take folks down with hands, weapons, shields, etc... One on one that depends upon the situation. Hitting a target that knocks the opposing target off the center of balance helps a lot (kick to the groin may or may not work, but one to the hip, one to the knee helps). This depends upon your size, your opponents size as well as your strength. Destroying a knee or hip usually helps end a fight quickly. If the person is running and you are chasing, clipping the bag leg trips them up for you to gain control on the ground. Joint locks if the fight is close helps depending upon size, strength, etc. If you can dodge and then get a lock in place, this can work as well once again depending upon the attackers strength, speed, positioning, etc.

As I said in a previous thread, "The Art of Running" is probably best.
But if you find yourself backed into a corner then your options are definitely limited. A kick to the balls is very effective but it is also very easy to defend against. If you are going for the nuts, I would recommend being close enough to use your knee. That way they may not see it coming. Again if you find yourself close enough to the person, a stiff thumb or finger to the side of the rib cage can be very effective. Preferably to the lower floating rib areas. This is a very sensitive spot and is very easy to find. People tend to react involuntarily when poked in the side. This would give you an opening to go for any other fragile points that may present themselves.
But I stand by my first recommendation.

If its a fight, then a kick to the balls may not work. I've seen plenty of guys take one square in the boys and not even feel it because of adrenaline.
The best way to get a guy down without a weapon is to shoot in on him and take him down. Or a side hip throw. Both might result in you going down with him, but you can perhaps get mount if so.

Depends on the size of the guy. Big guy? Break his leg or get in close, get on his back if you can and choke him down. Little guy? Keep him at a distance and break his center of mass. Then again, if you have a choice, avoid having to do any of these.

Be fearless ... From there, it gets easy ... All you have to do is pick the opponent up, and slam the guy down on the ground, you can be 185lbs, and have enough power to pick a 400lbs person off the ground atleast 2 inches, and then from there, they go tumbling down ... Lol !

Ask him to lay down prone with his head near your foot.
WTF kinda question is this? There's no one answer that will work in all or most cases, except a weapon. Firearms do the trick well, so I hear.
