Okay, first I know most will say "your not a breeder so spay your dogs" or " go adopt a dog", but regardless, if anyone has some helpful advise it would be much appreciated. My two dogs are both virgins (he's 5 and she's 2) and he is much shorter then she is. She is almost finished this heat (she's at day 13 or so with less then 1 week to go max) and he is having the hardest time. Are there any tricks that might be helpful? It is getting annoying watching him try so hard and just miss every time!!

They are both of the same breed, he is just shorter then she is. She is accepting him and even bends down a bit, but he just doesn't know where to put it. I do have homes lined up for the puppies when they do decide to come and I am a huge animal advocate, so I do know about the poor homeless animals out there. Call me greedy, because I would like a grandpuppy before I fix them both (which I have all intentions of doing after atleast 1 litter.) I have tried holding her while my boyfriend tries putting a pillow under him, but it just isn't working.

Before you go through all the effort to help out these two lovers , make a visit to your local animal shelter . This is most likely where your puppies will eventually end up .
This doesn't sound like you are preserving the bloodline of a pedigreed pair . Do you know that your female will live longer if spayed . Love the nice dogs that you have , but don't breed them just to see what you will get .

First off, I'd like to say that there are so many unwanted puppies in this world, that it seems a shame to make more unwanted, mixed-breed puppies. Also, spayed and neutered dogs are healthier and tend to make better pets.

Now that that's aside, you want to be careful if you are mating two dogs that are so far apart in size. Never mate a small female to a large male dog, because the size of the puppies could seriously injure or even kill her when she's trying to give birth.

I had a smaller male dog for awhile with an unspayed larger female dog. I was very careful not to let them mate, but I noticed that she would lie on her side so he could start to try to mate with her. I had to constantly break up their attempts, until I got her spayed, but they seemed to have no issues with the mating process, despite their size.

If the size difference is so great that he can't position himself, maybe they shouldn't be mating in the first place.

If you are going to breed your dogs against all advice to the contrary, make sure you have enough money for good prenatal care for the female dog, including a c-section if it becomes necessary. In Alabama, mixed breed puppies are being given away for free since no one wants them. Make sure you have homes lined up for the puppies before you breed them. That's what responsible breeders do!

The female is the one who comes to the male. When she
is ready she will let him do it. She will position herself
so he can do his thing. Some people breed much larger
dogs with smaller ones, so it's not like it can't happen.

But if you are determined to breed them, than I would suggest
something else. You can manually stimulate the male, and
insert it into the female. But you need to do it right away
cause the clock is ticking.

If she is this late in her heat you may want to wait until her next one. You could check with your vet to get your female artificially inseminated, aka AI. I've bred Australian Cattle Dogs and Beagles for over 10 years and we have done that several times with good results. Is your female resisting, squirming around, ext? You may want to try restraining her if she will not become aggressive towards you or your male. But if he is having that much trouble, I would recommend AI.

well you can dig a hole that makes up for the difference in sizes? If she seems like she is willing to accepthim, then she would probably stand in the hole and wait for him. Works with horses and donkeys.

And don't let the jerks who think animal rights mean spaying. They wont realize their idiocity until there are about 7-8 dogs left in the world and they are too bloodlined to breed.

Hi! I just went through the same thing with my dogs. First off, you may have to help them....seriously! You will have to hold your female whil the male does his duty. Or, if you are on your own, I've seen some breeders put the two of them in a large plastic container (lid off obviously) to help hold them both. You can also give him something to stand on, or you can hold her down in a laying position. If she is not ready to stand for him, all of this info will be useless. But I hope it helps at least!!

Try to put the male dog on a higher surface try to help the poor little guy and see if he will still do it while you hold onto him.

It sounds like you are trying to get two different breeds of dogs to mate. Yeah, maybe you shouldn't be messing around with stuff you know nothing about.

IF the female wants to mate she will allow the male dog. They find ways. IF you really want to go through with if, although you may think it crazy, hold her down. It may sound like rape but it'll work if that's what you want. YOu may need to hold her head tightly so you or your male dog won't get bit. I however have seen German Shepards allow themselves to be bred by Beagles. So maybe she doesn't approve of him.
