I have been told that it is much cheaper to get accommodation when I get there, but a friend has just been to Thailand & said it was cheaper to book over the internet??? I'm looking for something fairly luxurious & am travelling in 2 weeks time. Thanks : )

what i do is call the hotel and make reservations, then you only make a down payment at the same price as on line or maybe cheaper, don't be shy and ask for a discount. Most of these travel web sites don't list the hotel telephone number but if you do a google of the hotel your find it has it own web site with a phone number. And your friend is right some hotels do charge more for arriving with no reservations.

I have been to Thailand about a year and a half ago and Phi Phi Island was quite popular although i found the part of the island where they filmed the movie "The Beach" very crowded and a bit dirty in my opinion (cigarette butts in the water, rubbish on the sand and in the water) but keep in mind this is just one of many beaches on Phi Phi island.

If you have your heart set on staying on Phi Phi island and not just doing a day trip over there on the ferry i would book before you get over there to secure your acommodation as it is quite a popular place to stay.

Another option to look at is the fact that acommodation is quite cheap and readily available all around Phuket and you would have no problems getting luxurious acommodation on very short notice. Phi Phi Island is about an hours boat ride from the mainland so if you it is not absolutely essential that you stay on Phi Phi island i wouldnt prebook and i would just do one or two day trips. There is more to see if you stay in Phuket and do lots of Day Trips.

If i was to go again i would not pre book my acommodation and just book it when i landed as everything and i mean EVERYTHING is negotiable.

Before you buy/book anything think about what is the most you are willing to pay for it and halve it. The Thai people are great negotiators and if you are a good negotiator you will get some real bargins. Dont be afraid to start walking away if you dont get your price, usually they will meet you in the middle before they let you walk away. Even if they dont give you what they want just move onto the next hotel/shop and negotiate again, eventually you will get the price you want.
