today i chipped a back tooth, pretty bad actually, and it was after my dentists office hours, so will have to make an appointment tomorrow. however, i was curious what they were going to do, also i just moved back here, and haven't been to this dentist in a long time, so curious if i will have to have my clean up too (just had one in jan, so i dont need it!). i am 33 weeks pregnant, so can't do xrays, and have a heart murmur so have to take antibiotics before i go to the dentist. am i going to have to take them to get this fixed? is that safe when pregnant? never chipped a tooth so not sure what is going to be done or what i should do. thanks for everyones help!!

So let me get this right...33 weeks is like almost time to be due right? I did the calculation of 33 weeks with about 4 weeks in a month making 8 months and 1 week pregnant. Since you're almost due I would just have your baby first and then go back to the dentist to get everything cleaned and fixed. That is unless the chipped tooth is realllllllllllllllly bothering you like infected or abcessed. I thought they could just cap your tooth so it's not all jagged and then when you have the baby you could go back and have the tooth removed if you didn't like the cap.
I'm sure the dentist will advise you as to you best option if you just explain to him/her the situation with your heart murmur and the pregnancy. But at this point the baby's life is probably the most important thing on your mind. Good luck with the tooth and with your new baby.

Yes you need to take antibiotics. Call any local 24 hour pharmacy. ASk to speak to the pharmacist. Tell him/her that you chipped a tooth and are pregnant with a heart murmur. Ask them if there are any antibiotics you can take while pregnant.
They will know.
No the dentist will not make you have your teeth cleaned. It is your choice. You are the customer which means you are the boss. They cant make anyone get a teeth cleaning or have any work done. So if you only want your tooth fixed they will do that for you.
BUT research has been conducted showing that not having clean teeth can possibly lead to a premature baby. Seriously. It is important to have good oral health all the time and especially when you are pregnant. So if it has been more than 8 months since your last teeth cleaning, get your teeth cleaned to prevent having a low birth weight (premature) baby.

It's your choice whether or not you have your teeth cleaned. If asked, just say no, I just had it done. Make sure you remind this dentist that you do have a heart murmur to see if he wants to put you on antibiotic first and then fix your tooth. Actually, I would say something when you call in the morning to save yourself a trip if you need the antibiotic first. Being pregnant shouldn't have anything to do with fixing your tooth. Good luck!

I also have mitral valve prolapse and must have antibiotics when I have ANY dental work done including cleanings. What did the dentist do in January? If a cleaning was done without antibiotics it should not have been done that way. Novocain is fine. You can have xrays done as they are very weak at the dentist office and with shielding there is no harm done. Actually, at 33 weeks you are not at risk anymore.
Have your tooth fixed and your cleanings done. Take antibiotics for your cleaning as well as repair.

Ask your dentist, tell him you are 33 weeks, perhaps you can have some temporary thing done, or if it's not painfull, just wait till delivery. I think it might be more harmfull to you and baby to be in that flat position on your back while the Dentist works on the tooth, ask, and get solid facts.--------
Get dental treatment during the second trimester. During the first trimester most of the baby's organs are being formed, and most dentists and obstetricians suggest avoiding that period to minimize risk. During the third trimester it may be very uncomfortable for you to lie down in a dental chair. If you have to have dental care late in pregnancy, your dentist should encourage you to shift your position every three to seven minutes

My dentist just scolded me for not going when I was pregnant. You can all that stuff done, they have shields to protect you tummy. It's actually not a good idea to not go when your pregnant. Something to do with pregnancy, bleeding gums, what-not. Make the appointment and rest assure that the dentist knows what is good for you and your pregnancy.

CONGRATULATIONS IN YOUR PREGNANCY. SINCE YOU'RE ABOUT 7 MONTHS PREGNANT AN X-RAY MAY BE SAFELY DONE WHEN DOUBLE SHIELDING IS USED.
THE TREATMENT DEPENDS ON HOW BAD THIS CHIP IS.
YOU WILL HAVE TO TAKE THE ANTIBIOTIC TO RECEIVE ANY DENTAL TREATMENT, BUT THE DENTIST MAY OPT TO WAIT UNTIL AFTER YOU DELIVER YOUR BABY.
