I think they take the voice of the extreme fundamentalists to be the beliefs of all Christians, and they mix up the politics of the stereotypical fundamentalist with their religion.

Really, there is only one tenet that a person must hold to be considered "Christian." There are Christians who are pro-choice, Christians who believe in evolution, Christians from every socio-economic background imaginable. It is actually possible to have an intelligent debate about the content and accuracy of the Bible, and no one will stone you for it.

That we are judgmental and" holier than thou".We're not. And I don't think they understand that you can have a real and personal relationship with someone you can't see and touch. Our belief is in a living Jesus--He's very real.

And I think unbelievers think Christianity is about a list of rules that you must or must not do. But that isn't true. However, when you accept Jesus as your Savior, your wants, desires and opinions really do change. And not because we miraculously become some kind of "saint", but because the Holy Spirit that now resides within us enables us to change for the better. Look, we've been unbelievers. We know all the arguments--but now being on the other side, we've seen the difference. You don't lose anything when you become a Christian, but what you gain in this life (as well as the next) is worth everything.

That there are many strains of theology and not all follow the same ideas. Sometimes non-believers look at just the loudest and most obnoxious as spokesmen for us all. Believe it or not, Christianity is a very rational religion based on the ideas of Love and peace.

1) That all bible believers, that all who claim they are christian will make it to heaven. Jesus stated this is not the case - there will be those who think they are following Him that will not make it. There are also those who don't realize they are following Him that will.

2) That we agree 100% with the Bible.

We know there are errors in there. We know that man has taken small pieces out of context and built entire erroneous theologies around them - misused portions of it to condone that which should be condemned, and condemned that which should be condoned.

Jesus was killed by the religious leaders of His day. The same is happening now in the minds of men - pushed in a large part by the religious.

The "trick" is in seeking Jesus and finding the truths amongst the pages - pages which, if you're paying attention you will see played out in life as confirmation of their message.

Great question! Thanks for asking it.

I think the most common misconception is that religion is the same thing as true Christianity. True Christianity is a relationship/friendship with our Savior, Jesus Christ, not a set of rules and regulations.

If people could see past the denominations and the legalistic attitudes to Jesus Himself, I think a lot more people would discover for themselves what a beautiful and loving Person He really is.

that having a relationship with God is not comparable to religion itself. Also, the bible is unlike anything a person can understand without the relationship. The relationship is the key that unlocks the mysteries that are not understood by the curious or casual reader.

That Christians are sinners like everyone else. No Christian is better than any other person. We just understand the power of the blood of Christ, that washes and forgives our sin.
