I think children are assigned too much work that involves the regurgitation of information and not enough work that involves researching a topic or a point and drawing a personal and well-thought-out conclusion. Too much information and not enough processing skills.

It's not so much that it's too much homework, is that it is useless homework. As some other answerers have said, instructors just give kids "busy" work half the time.
I think that in classrooms the amount of homework required should vary depending upon the student's average in that class. For example, a child who is barely passing math should have to complete more practice problems at night than a child who has A's. If homework were handled this way it would serve as a way to catch up students who are falling behind AND as a way to motivate students to make better grades!
Anymore it seems that teachers are completely abandoning the idea that if you give a man a fish he eats only for a day but if you teach a man to fish he'll never go hungry. They just throw information at students for them to put on a test later. The homework is generally just an exercises in memorization. Students aren't taught HOW to learn or how to think. We are just expected to memorize facts.
It will sound rude and I hate to offend any of the truly good educators out there, but teachers have really dropped the ball. It seems like teachers just want to provide students with materials and let them go. They don't want to do their job anymore, which is TO TEACH. They are babysitters with shelves full of books. What happened to good class conversations and making sure that the students understood, by any means necessary? One problem is our huge class sizes. We need more and better teachers. Teachers are simply giving up and robbing us of a good education.

No not too much homework, however a lot of useless homework, busy work stuff. If the school systems could learn to "teach" how homework collates to the testing material, then the schools would see a lot of what they request is wasted learning time. Then they could assign homework that will help the students learn.
For to many years I have seen and heard "I do not know why we have to do this, it was stuff we did last (week) on the test. "
Schools need to teach the students how to learn from homework Not just dump a lot of stuff on them to do. Then they would be able to assign more applicable homework to be done.

I save listening to this from mothers and fathers. infants are staying at college longer hours and coming abode with a ton of homework. I remember decrease back interior the 70's and 80's we even had a era at college the place you probably did your artwork and that they had tutors there to help out so as that way you no longer often ever had homework. sure I had some homework for particular initiatives at college, yet they have been commonly exciting initiatives. that's because of the standards and state attempting out. the colleges get the threats of being closed down or no investment in the event that they could't strengthen their rankings and that they experience they could try this by way of giving numerous homework. they have each thing backwards. we could desire to bypass decrease back to the previous way of doing issues and make childrens bypass to the community faculties and Universities to take there top point classes. quite once you think of approximately it how numerous this crap so which you utilize as an person or compelled to apply on the interest? no longer plenty. lots of the flaws we use as adults and on the interest are our undemanding 3 R's and our stories.

As a teacher-canidate, I can honestly say it depends on the teacher and it depends on the motivation of the child. On average, a child should have about a half hour of homework per night with projects once in awhile which should take a little more. The reason that teachers give homework is to ensure that the lessons taught in class are drilled in and to assess their progess and understanding. This half hour, however, should be for the average child who finishes 90% of their work in school and is able to complete their homework with an average speed and ability.
Sometimes kids just DON'T want to learn, are unable to work as fast as their peers, or in some cases, just argue against doing it which can lead to HOURS of homework out of something like an activity sheet or 20 simple math questions.
If you believe your child is struggling with his/her homework, or if they really are just recieving too much homework, talk with the teacher. Teacher's are NOT out to get your child! (At least, they shouldn't be!) If you talk to them, they may cut it down, realizing they are assigning too much, or give you suggestions to help your child finish his/her homework.

No.
when I was in highschool I had 3-4 hrs of homework a night and then more on the weekends. Education is power and having large expectations for assignments is great training for later on in life.
Less whining more learning!

Yes I do, but I also believe homework is pointless. Fair enough when you get assignments and projects.
But my daughter was having to do research on the internet in kindergarten!!!! Plus a page of words to write over and over and then put those words into sentences, two books to read plus 2 A4 pages of science/maths to complete. I really did think that was to much for a kindergarten child to do in one week. It was hard enough adjusting to the times and schedules and rules of school as well as going home and having to do more work.
Thankfully my daughter loved it and had no problem with it. But I did, I'd prefer my daughter spend her afternoons relaxing and playing with her sister and just enjoying being a child. Rather than sit at a desk all afternoon trying to get everything PERFECT for her teacher. It did stress her out at times because she wanted it all to be absolutely perfect, so would rub it all out and start again over and over. I thought the pressure put on them to complete it perfectly was just to much.
Now she is in Year 1 and has a structured homework schedule set by the teacher but I still think it isnt necessary. It just puts more pressure on her at the end of the day when she is already tired and worn out from a full day of learning at school. I dont think it allows her much down time, to just be a kid.
I cant even imagine what it is like for the kids that are put into childcare after school and dont see their parents till dinner time.

Yes when my son went off to school his first day of kindergaten I was all "aww my baby is heading to school" expecting to hear stories of reading time, naps, lunch, the stuff i thought they did, But he came home with homework on his first day of kindergarten and had it on a weekly basis,
He is a 1st grader now and gets homework every monday and it is due back the next day or he will loose 5 mins for everyday that it is late I think its a little much for a 6 year old

Not particularly. At least not the school my child goes to. However, I will say that they speak of extending the school day and shortening summers all the time and it's time for people to stop that! Children go to school enough, give them time to be children and enjoy summertimes. I think education is important but not to where it rules their every day.
p.s. it depends where your kid goes to school though. She attended another school where there was entirely too much homework.
