Get your puppy from a reputable breeder and make sure you'll be able to see at least one of the parents. There is NOTHING wrong with crate training a dog. All of mine have been crate trained and I haven't had any problems with mine. However, if you are getting a toy breed, you may want to consider pad or litter box training it because many small breeds will not want to go potty outside when the weather is bad. Make sure that your dog has PLENTY of chew toys to keep it occupied when your not at home, and keep it in the crate, or confined to a certain area until it gains your trust that it won't tear up the house, ext. I give my dogs rawhide bones, kong toys with treats and/ or peanut butter inside to keep them occupied. Let your puppy out ever half our or so to go potty and stay out there for at least 5 minutes because many dogs will not completely empty their bladder just one time. EXERCISE your dog! Take it on walks, play with it outside, ext. Lack of exercise, and lack of stimulation, often times will cause a dog to be destructive. If you adopt a dog from the animal shelter, you might want to be careful since this will be your first dog and your mom isn't absolutly thrilled about this. I am NOT against shelter dogs at all, but with adults you don't know their background and how they will react, or what habits they have. If you are going with a pure breed, Labs and Golden Retreivers make great first dogs. Australian Cattle Dogs are also great dogs, I have bred and raised them for over 15 years. However, they need a good amount of exercise and they need to be kept occupied when they are left alone until they are housebroken. They do make great outdoor dogs as well. Do your research on your breeds, find a breeder, and also ask them for any training tips, ext. Good luck.

Firstly, never buy a puppy from a pet store. Pet shops buy these puppies from puppy mills - dog "factories" that are filthy, huge, and churn out hundreds of unhealthy puppies. If you must purchase a dog, go to a reputable breeder (not someone who advertises here or on Craigslist.) Check AKC.org for more info, and to learn about breeds. You may want to volunteer at a shelter to learn more about what kind of dogs would work well with your family.
Also, modern dog training is less about using corrections for bad behavior, and more about rewarding the good behaviors. Most "bad" behaviors are the fault of the owner, in any case : we know enough about dogs now to recognise that rewarding the good stuff is the most effective way to teach a dog,
Taking a class with your new pup will also teach you a lot about this, as will these websites. Do a lot of reading! Go to an agility trial! You will learn a lot just by meeting other dog people, so don't be shy. Have fun.

I would suggest you buy a small dog. They are much easier
to handle. Buy from a breeder not a bet store.
You will need to buy food bowls, toys for the dog, brush and
a comb, depending on how much hair the dog will have.
Buy a crate and some puppy pads, and buy a good dog
food like science diet for puppies. Buy the small bites.

When you get your puppy, I know you will want to play with
him all the time, But puppies need to sleep alot. Put him
in his crate with a blanket, and let him sleep. Put his food
bowls down in an area that he will be aloud to play and
eat in and also put a puppy pad there to. When you take
the puppy out of the crate, he will need to pee right away,
so carry him to the pee pad, and he will smell it, and he
should go on it right away, if not, don't hit him or yell at it.
Whip up the pee with the pee pad and put it back on the
floor. Feed the pup and don't forget to give him a drink of
water to. Play with him and soon the pup will need to pee
again. So make sure your near the pee pad. Never
let you pup run around the house, or they will not learn to
use the pee pad, they will forget where it is. So keep the
pup in an area where he is aloud to play and eat and pee
all the time, until he knows where to pee and also make
sure after you play with him you put him back in his crate.
The crate teaches the pup to hold his pee. So make sure
that when you buy the crate, it's not to big. The pup should
only have enough room to turn around in or else they will
make a space in the crate to pee in. Do these things and
your mom will be glad you did cause your new pup will
learn the things you want him to.

Go through a reputable breeder. Crate training is the best because the crate become the puppy's den like it would have in the wild and makes them feel safe and secure. Just do not use the crate as punishment or this will make the puppy not like the crate.

Please don't buy from a pet store because those are puppy mill dogs. No reputable breeder would sell to a pet store.

Buy directly from a breeder because they actually take care of the puppy's parents. If you love your dog, then you should protect the puppy's parents, too.

Good luck with your puppy!

GO TO THE ANIMAL SHELTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Do not buy from a puppy mill!!!!!!!! Enroll your puppy in puppy kindergarten immediately (Petsmart has a great program) and they will help you get off to a great start. They also give you a manual to read to help with training at home.

don't crate train it but don't puppy pad train it
reason:
Crate Train- bad for mental ability
Puppy Pad Train: teaches the dog to urinate on anything he/she can find
