LOL....I personally don't do it but have seen others apply it that way. Maybe it has something to do with concentration....like people who stick out their tongues when they are working on a task that requires a lot of concentration.

It is an attempt to stretch your face so that you don't smear the mascara under your eyes....it doesn't work...but the mouths hang open anyway.

it's very difficult/impossible to apply mascara with your mouth closed. its like how you cant sneeze with your eyes open, its something the body does suconciously

If you touch your own eyelashes you will see your eye tends to close, It is to protect the eye. If you open your mouth pulling your upper lip down as tight as you can, You eyelashes are not as sensitive.

When you stretch your eye out that way, your jaw kind of automatically lowers itself. And when you have to concentrate on not poking yourself in the eye, usually you aren't concentrating on whether your mouth is closed.

ha ha this is funny i never thought about this until i read it but it's so true. I have no idea, maybe it's to open our eyes up wider but yet again i don't use it that often so i'm probably the last person to know.

It's involuntary... like blinking. When you open your mouth, it has an effect on the muscles surrounding your eyes, making it less likely that you will blink. Try it and see!

because when you breathe through your mouth you have better balance than when you breathe through your nose. i can do it without the mouth open but i heard that a while ago and they say thats the reason! weird huh?

It stretches the skin down away from under the eyelashes so we don't get mascara on our face, just our lashes.

lol i love this question. i am a make up art-is and that's how my teacher though me. we do it because it pulls the bottom lid down farther so are eyes get get wider and the lashes spread, so the mascara doesn't clump.
