No the media is giving Catholics a bad rep.
For one - the actual percentage of accused priests in less then 1% of all the Catholic priests in America.
Two - most of these allegations can never be proven. Many seem to be made by people who just want to make a quick buck. And it is costing Catholics their schools, their churches.
Where I am from, Oregon, a lawsuit against the church for alleged sexual abuse dating back thirty years ago is being appealed. The so called victims say they want everything, even the churches, schools and land that belong to the actual Catholic followers - not to the church. They believe it is their right to this.
So thank the media for blowing this way out of proportion. Reverends in other faiths have abused children - we don't get to see them on TV. But in the Catholic case - accusations that should have been thrown out because of no proof and being way past the limitations, are actually being heard.
*edit*
And why does being celibate make one a child abuser, or more prone to be one? That is the stupidest thing I have heard in a long time. Although I'm sure it's hard for some to understand - since they think they should be sharing themselves with anything that moves.
I was celibate for several years until my husband. Can't say I ever had a desire to molest children.

Your question (assertion) insists that all and sundry catholic clergymen are ABUSING little boys. that's untrue and has been shown. Ther is an extremely small share of clergymen that are responsible. do no longer make ERRORENOUS STATEMENTS like that. I even have in my view recognize a clergyman that supposedly abused a boy 30 years in the past and no person knew approximately it. He went directly to grow to be a large priest, properly known in his city, helped many people who needed tips, volunteered in nursing residences etc and replaced into properly cherished. a guy got here forward and insisted that he replaced into abused by way of the comparable priest approximately 30 years in the past. He could desire to no longer tutor something and the priest insisted that no longer something occurred. The then boy replaced into from a house the place he replaced into abused and the priest tried to help. the mind-blowing consequences replaced into that priest replaced into 'bumped off' from his obligations, foreced to retire and the church paid the 'boy' many hundreds of $$$$ for his supposedly abuse. that's amazingly unhappy yet additionally real.

There are a hell of a lot of priests, statistically some of them are going to be paedophiles. All that proves is that being a priest doesn't prevent paedophilia, not that it encourages it. The only differences are that Catholic priests generally have frequent access to young boys without supervision, and they're not allowed to have sex with women (this condition would discourage many people from becoming priests, but would not have an affect on someone who wasn't interested in women). The other difference is that it's always reported, whereas paedophilia that doesn't involve a priest usually isn't.

This could be because US seminaries are far less demmanding in terms of workload than those in Europe.
The pedophile obviously does not have the morals needed to become priest, but they slipped through anyway.

Maybe because they, themselves were abused this way and are acting out what they know
maybe because they took a vow to be celebate and it was unnatural for them to not be with someone sexually, and they take their frustrations out on children
maybe they know that they are no better than anyone, but want to have power and control and causing others to be in pain and hurting, makes them feel strong
there could be many reasons.... all of them get to the fact that it is wrong... it is sin... it is not forgiven unless they repent and NEVER DO IT AGAIN! they do not practice what they preach... and worse!

because they keep on gripping that celibacy-for-priests doctrine. its a doctrine from buddhism. monks cant marry while in monastery.
they cant escape that 'urge'..they're humans too. only few people has been bestowed with that celibacy gift.
celibacy is optional. Paul considered it as a gift. Marriage and family is a gift from God also.
Levites, who were serving in the temple, had families of their own.
if only they will adhere to the Bible's teachings poor little boys will be spared from being victims.

For the same reason that Protestant ministers and sports coaches and school teachers and anyone else molests little children -- they are consumed by a spirit of lust and act out their perversions and fantasies on the most vulnerable members of society.
Evil isn't limited to Catholic priests or any other group of people. I wish you'd learn that sexual predators come from all walks of life, not just one.

It's not just Catholics or even just Christian Priests. Child molesters are in every land and every culture and religion.
For the record, it isn't just boys who get abused, let us not forget that.

Not every priest is automatically a pedophile. I get so sick of people badmouthing the church; yes, there've been cases of abuse, but just as many of these claims are nothing more than extortion attempts, plain and simple. And Catholics as a whole are holy and God-fearing people. I'm a Catholic from birth and I have no desire to molest children. Give us a break; the only reason these claims see the light of day is because the Holy Church has more money than Protestant churches to extort.

They abuse small children because the have access to small children without supervision. It is a crime of opportunity. They are considered trusted and safe because they are priests. The children they abuse are afraid to tell anyone because who would believe a child over a priest?
I think what really is giving Catholicism a "bad rap" as it were, is the fact that the archidiocies in most cases knew about the abuse and covered it up to protect their image in the community. They would just cover it up and move the priest to a new church where he would have access to a whole new crop of children.
The church chose to perpetuate abuse rather than protect children that is why they have a bad reputation.
