Firstly I would be more concerned about quality than price. HK is a major modern city but you still only get what you pay for and HK is reknowned for dodgy cheaper accommodation. This is a very easy city to get around in quickly so my advice would be to book your first night in a resonable hotel, study Lonely Planet, search the hostels on the internet and look around when you get there. I have learnt that what you see on the internet aint always what you get. At least if you have somewhere decent and secure for the first night you wont have to stress about finding somewhere as soon as you get there.

The youth hostels are pretty nice and cheap (from about $50HK in the dormitory to $200HK for a single), but not always open and a little out of the way. There is one at Mt. Davis Jockey Club, Bradbury Hall & Pak Sha O in the NT, Ngong Ping on Lantau Island (really nice), etc. Check the IYHA website for detailed information. You can find hostel booking on line from the Lonely Planet link. The YMCA Salisbury HK is not bad and well located, a little pricey but not too much considering you are in HK and space is at a premium. If you are like me and procrastinate until it's too late to book anything before your flight, you can easily find accomodation from the tourist office just before you walk out of the gate into the arrival terminal. The agents speak excellent english and are always very helpful. Pick up brochures, maps and other HK information there.

In general online booking is OK. You will be charged slightly higher than normal even though it says it's been discounted. In case of starred hotel, the price is competitive with other hotel. So no worries about it. But hostel? It can be tricky. If you know someone in HK who can ask or book for you, I think you can get a cheaper price. Bon Voyage!

For a week, try the YWCA, they have pretty competitive weekly rates. Bishop Lei International House, Cosmopolitan Hotel, Cosmo Hotel and Ramada Hotel also offers good rates.

Book online, although english is spoken in Hong Kong, it can be hard to navigate. The second time you go you will probably be able to just go to a place you know. It is easy to spend A LOT of money very quickly there. Get the "Lonely Planet guide and heed there warnings! especially if you intend to Bar hop.

BOOK ONLINE!
If you try to book there, you will be sadden to find out that there are no available rooms as you arrive. Also, there are so many conventions that could pack hotels at anytime, its just a safer bet to book ahead of time.

I think you should book online first. To look for hotel when you get there can be a waste of time.
