A computerized system is important in the field of medicine because it allows storage and retrieval of a greatly massive amount of information in a quick and efficient manner, which makes health care more effective. Such things become important when patient records need to be retrieved immediately, such as in the emergency setting, when allergies or other potentially-adverse reactions must be known before medications or anesthetics may be administered -- in this case, a computerized system would allow rapid search of a patient database to locate that information quickly, so that medical management may be appropriately administered.

Health informatics or medical informatics is the intersection of information science, medicine and health care. It deals with the resources, devices and methods required to optimize the acquisition, storage, retrieval and use of information in health and biomedicine. Health informatics tools include not only computers but also clinical guidelines, formal medical terminologies, and information and communication systems.
