its says im missing a codec to play the file on windows movie maker.. which codec am i missing?

There's no way any of us would be able to tell you for sure. In your Movie Maker options, make sure you've checked the box for automatically downloading codecs when necessary.

Try searching for and downloading DivX or XviD - lots of movie files are encoded using those. If you're just trying to play the movie, VLC Media Player is a great piece of free software that will play just about everything.

It could be any number of codecs really. Codec is short for Coder/Decoder.

Download this codec pack and it will have everything you need, and then some.
